The big raindrops crashed into the window. It was raining cats and dogs outside, and the sound of the rain made me sleepy. I was up the night before playing cards and watching tv shows with Cordae. The last three days, he was busy with work and stayed gone most of the day, which was a good and bad thing for me. It was good because it didnât make me think of Alexis, but it was bad because I missed him. I didnât know what to do with those feelings. I felt it was wrong to have those for feelings for Cordae when Alexis; excuse me, Bailey and him had something going on. Bailey thought I was in love with Cordae, but that wasnât the case. I felt safe and protected when Cordae is here. I feel like if Dulce did show up, Cordae would protect me. Unlike all the other men who had let me down. I didnât know what it was like to have a real friend, and I felt Cordae was it. Thatâs what I had to think because he could wake up one day and kick me out of his home.
Dulce told us never to get attached to anyone because they could love us one day and then leave us the next. I saw firsthand what she meant when Cordae and Bailey had an argument the other night. I wanted to give her a hug and tell her everything would be ok. Bailey thought I was the enemy, but I was someone who was just like her, scared to get scarred and scared to lose anything worth keeping.
I didnât want to lose people being nice to me or treating me with dignity and respect. I didnât want to lose the feeling of being unafraid. I sure as heck didnât want to lose the one chance I had of finding out who I am. I did feel free. Like I could be myself around Cordae. I still had my reservations, and I still had Dulce in my system a lot, but my mind was free to think outside the life Dulce provided. I could see myself being the girls on the tv.
Even sleep felt different inside Cordaeâs home. I could lay my head down, and my body melted into the sheets. Nightmares were replaced with sweet dreams, and I often woke up smiling. Cordae wasnât doing anything special but treating me like a human being. Before I came up to my room, I sat down with Mrs. Francis after she cooked us dinner. Mrs. Francis was different from Cordae. She would come up to my room and ask me to help her cook or go outside with her to water the flowers. Whereas Cordae only took the initiative to talk to me when I talked to him first.
As strong-willed and intimidating as Cordae may seem, I could tell when he got around me he could fully be himself. Cordae wasnât much of a talker, but when he did open his mouth, his words meant something.
