Lisa had been resting for a few hours when she felt a gentle rapping at the door. “Lisa, can I come in?”

It was Brian. His voice was soft and gentle, and at first, she found herself feeling incredibly excited to know that he was there. It had taken a moment for her to remember that this was the man she was going to have to avoid at all costs. Whether her father was telling the truth about him having another partner already or if her father was lying about that because he felt threatened by his daughter’s attraction to her guard, those things didn’t even matter.

It wouldn’t change the fact that she needed to figure out a way out of the situation before anyone found out she was pregnant. Whether it was her father or Brian who found out, someone would want to punish her or take control of her child. If not that, they would simply just cause problems and try and control her. She couldn’t allow it. Not when she had a baby to think of.

Besides, she knew that her father would have Brian harmed. He would also be dishonored among the shifter allies, which would be a fate worse than death to a man who valued honor as highly as he did. She didn’t want to see that happen to him, though if her father had been right about his infidelity and he was already mated to another woman, then maybe it was something that he deserved to have happen to him. She still hadn’t decided about that yet. Her Rabbit was still convinced that Brian was the one. There was a serenity deep within her when she thought of him, no matter how difficult the rest of the world was being. She wanted to be with him whether she liked it or not.

“Come in,” she said. “But make it quick. I need to rest.”

“Are you feeling any better?” Brian asked, his voice soothing and calm. He came toward her bed, and she realized that he was holding a silver tray with a small vase of beautiful flowers in it.

She had honestly expected him to come up to her room sooner, asking whether or not her father had found out that they had been intimate with one another, but the thought didn’t even seem to be crossing his mind right now. His handsome brow was drawn in concern and he placed the tray on her bedside table. “I brought you some soup. And this…”

He held up a small vial of medicine; she could smell its contents immediately and found herself impressed by the blend. It was one that had been commonly used back on the planet Gadby, or at least was similar to it. Maybe it really would be able to help her with the nausea that she had been feeling ever since she realized that their night together had resulted in a pregnancy.

The tonic also contained herbs that were notorious for helping to aid in deep and restful sleep.
