Chapter 12.

“I THOUGHT WE WERE CATCHING up for lunch,” I said, though I could barely hear the words over the pounding of my heart. My hands felt sweaty and I shoved them between the folds of my skirt, trying not to think about the way I felt.

“We are,” he said, not taking his eyes off me. “I just needed to make sure you were okay, after everything Oliver said last night.”

His gaze darted to Ava, and then back to me. It was like he was trying to communicate with me without words. He understood me, and as crazy as it sounded, I understood him.

I waved my hand.

“She knows everything,” I said, lifting a shoulder in hopes to come across as casual. “You don’t need to speak in code around Ava.”

A smile trembled on his lips as he swept his eyes over to my sister.

“The next High Warlock... knowing all my secrets,” he said. Though his words implied he was nervous, his tone indicated that he didn’t seem to mind all that much. “I’m not sure if I should be honored, or terrified.”

I frowned at him, surprised by his words. What was that supposed to mean?

Before I could correct him, Ava jumped in.

“You need to spend some more time with us, obviously,” she said. Her eyes twinkled as though she wanted him to know she wasn’t bad, but I could tell she was slightly offended by his words. I couldn’t blame her for it either. “We don’t care who your parents are, or what type of paranormal you are, Christian. As long as you aren’t a member of the group trying to kill us, you’re all good.”

His attention snapped back to me.

“Trying to kill you? So the High Warlock was right. I do need to be with your more often, Bella. You shouldn’t be alone at all. Perhaps I should speak to the librarian. I can hang around the building all day. Or walk the perimeter of the Academy.”

He was acting like his role of my protector was already a done deal. Although I found that super adorable in a strangely endearing way, I also worried about what it entailed.

“Christian, I appreciate you worrying about me, but Matlock only employed you to walk me home. You don’t need to—”

“Fuck that, Bella. I’m serious.”

My mouth dropped open at the vehemence of his tone. It wasn’t just that he thought I was wrong, but he was angry about it.

Ava was hearing this, and I had no idea what she thought regarding the matter.

“so am I,” I said. I tried to keep the annoyance I had for him out of my tone, tried to make it seem like I was being rational, but it didn’t work as much as I hoped. “I can take care of myself. And just because you and I...”

I let my voice trail off, not quite sure what I was supposed to say in order to finish that sentence.

“Are fated mates and literally won’t be able to stay away from one another,” he finished for me.
