"I can't wait for the party tonight!" Jessica declared, running a hairbrush through her silky hair. "What do you think of my hair this way, Liz? Do you think I should get a perm?" Jessica had set her naturally wavy blond hair so that it was very full and curly.
Elizabeth shot her a look. "You remember what happened the last time you tried to do something drastic to your appearance," she said reprovingly. She was referring to the time a short while before when Jessica, tired of being an identical twin, had dyed her hair black, changed her style of dressing, and assumed an entirely new personality. Ironically, she had almost lost a modeling assignment she had been trying for as a result.
Jessica looked pained at the recollection. "Maybe you're right. Anyway Vogue says permed hair is going out of style."
Elizabeth looked at the cream-colored dress she had selected for Lila's party. "I still think this whole thing is wrong," she said unhappily. "If Jeffrey weren't so big on going, I wouldn't be in on it at all."
"Jeffrey has a lot of sense," Jessica said serenely, applying some eyeliner to deepen the color of her blue-green eyes. "This party's going to be fabulous! You should see the Fowlers' place. It looks like something out of Bride's magazine."
"Well, I still think it's a bad idea. For one thing, both the Harrises and Santellis could easily find out. And that would be a disaster."
"How could they find out? It's going to be a complete surprise." Jessica giggled. "I think Lila's idea to tell Maria and Michael to come by to see her cousin Christopher is perfect. Who'd ever suspect we'll all be there, hiding?"
"Well, I just hope it goes smoothly," Elizabeth said, frowning. "If it doesn'tâ"
"Don't be such a worrywart," Jessica chided her. "I wish I could have bought that silver dress I saw in Lisette's," she added sorrowfully. "It was gorgeous! It would've been perfect for tonight. This old thing," she added disparagingly, picking up the hem of her aquamarine halter dress, "has really had it. Do you think Mom and Dad would be willing to consider giving us more of an allowance?"
"No chance," Elizabeth said. "You know Mom. She'll tell you to get a part-time job. Like the one you had in the dating agency," she added with a giggle. Jessica had gotten into some real scrapes, but her job at the computer dating agency had always struck Elizabeth as one of the funniest. Jessica had decided after a short while that she was such a pro that she could dip into the company's files to find the perfect woman for the twins' older brother, Steven. None of the women Jessica had "found" for him had been the least bit appropriate. Jessica gave up the job after she tried to fix herself up and chose a real dud. That had been one of her last money-making schemes, and she had been burned badly enough to try to get along with only her allowance for months since!
Jessica frowned at her reflection.
