PANTING for breath, Sarah flopped over onto her back. At her side, Lance’s muscled limps struck a similar pose. She was convinced sex was the best form of communication especially with Lance doing most of the talking.

“So, we didn’t finish our conversation about your work.” She was genuinely curious to know more about him. “How long have you been in law enforcement?”

“Yeah,” he said, his voice hoarse. “I’ve worked in law enforcement for eight years. I did two years of college after high school, but decided higher education wasn’t for me. The academy was."

She frowned. High school? Math came natural to her, so she crunched the numbers in her head. The temperature in the room seemed to chill thirty degrees. She bolted up in bed, throwing Lance off her.

“That would ...” A sound, throaty and raw tumbled from her lips. She was having trouble forming words. “That,” she tried again. “That would make you, thirty?”

He chuckled. “Twenty-nine.”

Whoa. She didn’t see that coming. Sarah leaped from the bed, ankle be damned.

She curled her fingers into a fist. Her head felt like she sucked down a Big Gulp Slurpee and ice crystals had formed in her brain.

“Shit. Shit, shit, shit,” she hissed. “Oh God, what have I done?” She banged her fist against her forehead. “This was a mistake.”

Lance came to his feet. He grabbed her wrists, securing both in one hand.

“Sarah, what the hell?”

Shit. She was angry with herself. She was angry with him. Didn’t he know an older woman when he saw one? Had he been experimenting on the over the hill side?

She thought life had given her something new with Lance. Instead, her spending the night with him was yet another symptom of her inability to see life the way it was. She unleashed her hurt.

“I’m forty,” she snapped. His eyes widened. Great, would he run from the room screaming now. That old lady touched my butt. She had, multiple times. “I need to call a Lyft or Uber.”

Trying to free herself from his hold was useless. He was immovable.

“Lance, I need to leave.”

He hauled her up. He pressed her bare breasts against his broad chest, essentially trapping her with his body. “The hell you do,” he rumbled.

She shook her head. “Did you hear anything I said?” she screeched.

A furrow formed between his brows.

Why was he so calm? What was she supposed to do now for an age-appropriate lover? Did he need to hear it again before reality sank in?

“I’m old.” She held his gaze.

“You’re beautiful,” he said unblinking. “And, I want you. At any age, Sarah.”

Again, he said the unexpected. Don’t freak out. Don’t freak out. Her twenty-something year-old lover adored her body and thought her beautiful.

“You lying to me?” Seriously, who had a life like this? From a forty-four-year-old, lying despicable husband, to a twenty-nine-year-old sex god that curled her toes and warmed her heart. A fake news alert flashed before her eyes.

“No,” he growled. His erection pulsed against her belly.

Well, his hardness bobbing between them was definitely the truth.
