Chapter 12

On Monday evening, Mary Lou arrived home from work to see fabric pieces and scraps covering the kitchen table.

Magnolia was sitting on one of the chairs with needle in hand, sewing a dress. “You’re home already?”

“I’m always home around this time of day, when I’m on the late shift. The café closes at four and then we’ve got the cleaning up.”

Her mother was busy at the stove. “Magnolia and I have been having a lovely day sewing. Her dress is nearly finished.”

“Look at it.” Magnolia stuck the needle in the dress to keep her place and stood up holding the dress against her. It was almost down to her ankles and it was way too big.

That was the reason Mary Lou did all the family sewing. It wasn’t a good idea that Magnolia had allowed Mary Lou’s mother to help her with it. Mamm was skilled at sewing, but not at proper sizing. The dress was totally unflattering. Magnolia look so pleased with it that Mary Lou didn’t have the heart to tell her it was awful.

“Wunderbaar, and you think it will be ready for tomorrow night?”

“Jah.”

Mary Lou stepped closer and had a better look. “Do you think it’s too long?”

“A little.”

“You could cut about four or even six inches off the length, couldn’t you?”

“Jah, I thought it was too long,” Magnolia said.

“Why don’t you try it on after dinner and we’ll see how it looks?”

“You’ll help me?”

Mary Lou nodded. “I will, but after dinner. I’m starving right now.”

“Dinner will be ready in fifteen minutes. You girls can set the table.”

Mary Lou helped Magnolia move the dress and the fabric scraps off the table. Jacob had been on Mary Lou’s mind all day at work, so having Magnolia’s dress to think about was a welcome distraction. She would fix the dress the best she could. It had to be practically re-made, and with the dinner outing scheduled for the next night there wasn’t time enough for that.
