“Whose house is this?” Breonna asked, breaking the silence that had filled my car since I closed the passenger door for her and got in on the driver’s side of my car.

Even though I didn’t know Breonna like the back of my hand yet, it was apparent the interaction with the older lady at her church had her mind in a state of unsurety.

Hell, it had me shook, and I was only an outsider looking in when it came down to the elements of the encounter. Nevertheless, I didn’t want to press Breonna since it was obvious her mind was already in overdrive from her seat on the passenger side of my car.

“Are you okay? If you want to talk about it, I’m right here,” I offered, attempting to speak to the uncertainty I could see in her soul which was clearly visible through her demeanor. “You have as much of my time as you need and more.”

Breonna offered me a smile in response, but I could see straight through it. If she wasn’t good for anything aside from her beauty, she was good for a façade. Her ability to act like she was okay when she wasn’t, was the one thing I wanted to change about her, especially when it came to me.

In situations where I was concerned, I wanted her to be able to be her true, vulnerable, and fragile self.

I wanted her to come to me when she was at her weakest so I could be the one to help her achieve wholeness.

“No, it’s okay. I’m fine.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

I nodded in response before quickly getting out of my car so we could go into the house we were parked in front of before one of the residents came out first.

“Whose house is this?” Breonna questioned again, batting her long eyelashes in my direction as her eyes showed confusion.

“This is my mom’s house,” I answered, grabbing her hand, pulling her from her spot on the sidewalk that she was attempting to stay in.

Using my size to my advantage, I was able to pull her to my side utilizing minimal effort.

“Your mom. You want me to meet your mom?”

“Not just my mom. I want you to meet my little brothers too.”

“But why, Kevion?” she questioned all the while attempting to backtrack to my car.

“Because I’m serious about you, Breonna. I know in my heart you’re going to be in my life for a long time… I know I want you by my side for forever. Plus, I just met your mom, and after we leave here, I’ll be meeting your dad,” I said with a shrug because after saying it out loud, my reasoning sounded even more logical than it had when it was just a thought.

Introducing Breonna to my family wasn’t what I thought I’d be doing on my Sunday afternoon, but I wouldn’t change the shift of events even if I could.

The moment I peeped her out in the crowd at Christian Baptist Church, I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my day with her.
