Chapter 14

“Honey, I’m home,” Carrie called happily as she walked into the house.

Bas let out a bark from his spot in front of the roaring fire in the fireplace.

“Wrong ‘honey’ you knuckle head,” she commented, earning a pitiful look from the big dog.

“In the kitchen,” came Dej’s voice.

Carrie’s smile widened as she made her way toward that sweet voice, the succulent aromas wafting over her as she entered the busy kitchen.

Dej was just putting the finishing touches on dinner, and turned to block Carrie’s view of their meal.

“Go wash up and sit down. Dinner’s a surprise,” she instructed, leaning up to kiss the taller woman.

Carrie moaned softly against Dej’s lips before retracing her steps and going into her bedroom to change.

When she returned to the table, Carrie quickly took her seat and waited for Dej to join her.

“I hope this turns out okay,” Dej said as she came into the dining room with a plate in each hand.

“It smells fabulous, sweetheart, so I wouldn’t worry too much,” Carrie assured as Dej laid one of the plates in front of her.

She laughed when she spied the contents of the dish, her heart swelling at the thought her wife had put into the meal.

Sitting in front of her was a bacon-chili-cheeseburger, generously piled high with caramelized onions, just the way she liked it. The dish had been a favorite of hers since she was a pre-teen, and just the fact that Dej had gone to the trouble of making it for her made Carrie’s eyes mist over.

“I made it from scratch, so I hope everything tastes okay,” Dej offered, hoping her attempt to re-create one of Del’s signature burgers didn’t fall short.

Carrie leaned forward and inhaled deeply. Her mouth was watering like crazy, and she couldn’t wait to dig in. Gingerly, she lifted her knife and made a tentative cut, careful about the amount of pressure she put on the utensil.

Carrie’s bandages and stitches had been removed the day before, and while her hand would remain in a brace for another few weeks, she was happy to be able to use it again.

“How does it feel?” Dej asked cautiously, making sure to keep her tone casual. She didn’t want Carrie to think she was going into over-protective mode.

“It feels weird,” Carrie replied, “It’s tingly. It doesn’t hurt, and it’s not numb, but it feels funny to be using it after not being able to do so for the last couple of weeks.”

Dej nodded, understanding completely what her wife meant. When she began to walk again after the shooting, Dej had experienced the same sensations.

The pair ate quietly, Carrie devouring her burger with a carnal fervor while Dej made her way through the tofu stir-fry with a little more poise.

When they were finished, Dej started to ask if Carrie wanted to talk, but was cut off before the question made its way to her lips.

“Promise me you’ll never leave again,” Carrie said, her eyes fixed on her empty plate and her knee bouncing nervously.
