NINE

Macy awoke the next morning, her mouth dry and her eyes nearly watering from the sunlight blazing into her room. She was still in last night’s clothes, her popcorn bowl was gone, and Cleo and Dex were nowhere to be seen.

She bolted upright and slid off the bed, heading out of her room and calling Cleo’s name. She nearly collided with Q in the hallway.

“Whoa! Q, I can’t find Cleo. Oh my gosh, how can this have happened?”

Q grabbed her by the upper arms. “Goodness, woman, get hold of yourself. When I came in, you were passed out with popcorn and Cleo needed to go out, so I took her out.”

“You didn’t use the sliding doors, did you?” Macy’s eyes went wide.

“Of course not. I told you I do my research. We went out through the garage, and she was a very good girl. I saw your medicine schedule for her on the counter, so I smeared some peanut butter on the pills, and she took them like a champ,” Q explained.

“Where is she now?”

“I made a bed for her from a couple of comforters, and she’s been sleeping next to me in the office while I work. Your latte is in the microwave, by the way. You looked like you needed rest, so I didn’t want to wake you.”

Macy nearly melted with gratitude. It had been so very long since someone had been able to step in and take care of her and those important to her. Swallowing all of her gushy emotions, because she knew Q wouldn’t appreciate her showing them, she smiled.

“You’re amazing, Q. You really are.”

“Ew. Whatever. Come get your latte and I’ll tell you about my plan,” she directed, turning and heading for the kitchen, with Macy trailing after her.

“Plan?” Macy asked. She took a sip of her latte and closed her eyes in profound appreciation.

“I did some creeping on social media and found out where Adele’s husband hangs out. It’s a dive bar at the beach, so I’m going to approach him there,” Q replied.

Macy blinked at her, unable to entirely process what she was saying.

“Take a drink,” Q suggested.

Macy did.

“We have to coordinate our schedules because someone has to be with Cleo at all times for the next two weeks.”

“I figured that when I saw all the meds she has to take. So one of my tasks is to babysit a stoned dog for a couple of weeks, got it. I knew this would be an interesting job when I applied. So did you do any research on Adele yet?” Q asked.

Macy went over what little she had found, and they both jumped when the doorbell rang. Cleo, who typically sounded the canine alarm when that happened, didn’t utter a peep.

“Wow, she must really be crashed,” Macy commented. “Lemme go see who dares knock at this hour.”

“I swear to you, if it’s that obnoxious little round cop…” Q muttered.

Macy shot her a warning look and opened the door, expecting Mountain and Teapot. She was surprised to see a highly fashionably dressed young woman instead.
