Consensus of Five

The president of the United States, as commander in chief, has the unilateral right to exterminate billions in minutes. We should not place in the hands of one person the power to end life on earth as we know it. (It would appear that some other nuclear powers have also delegated the power to make this decision to one individual.) There is nothing in the US Constitution or federal laws that grants this authority solely to the president—it has just been the practice since Truman. It is a practice that could be easily changed.

Before pushing the nuclear button, we should require that a majority of the president, vice president, secretary of defense, speaker of the house, and the president pro tempore of the Senate have to agree to end life on earth as we know it.
