10.

Most of us are aware that there are vast problems facing us in this new millennium. From terrorism to tsunamis we are beset by mortal threats to our persons and our world. These problems are like the bloody wounded on a battlefield—we can’t properly tend to the injured until we achieve a ceasefire. And, as in any armistice, we must come up with the terms of cessation before we can lay down our arms. This is first an intellectual enterprise. All sides must decide what they are willing to give up in order to attain peace and to tend to the deep wounds that have been inflicted on our psyches, our bodies, and our planet.

From this point on I will try to provide suggestions that may be used as tools to assuage the terrible passions unleashed by scientific advancement that far outstrips our emotional development; advancements that have overpopulated, polluted, and alienated nearly the entire world.

I cannot predict or prescribe a specific political system that will arise but I can point out the tools that seem the most useful; with examples of how those tools might be applied.

It is my tendency to think about problems, exploring the causes and elements, causes and results. I like pondering. But we need action in this world, action against these anti-human systems, and we need it now. This because there will come a point of no return in our ecology and the friction among our many peoples. The suffering in this world is like the measles outbreak that recently occurred in New York City, up in the Bronx. At first the news reports were saying that people in Northern Manhattan and the Bronx should get inoculated; then the cases spread down to the East Village. It only takes one cough or sneeze, one enraged soldier sitting near the button, to bring down everything. This might not happen but there aren’t enough safeguards in the world to stop an unexpected chain of events.

We need to act preemptively and fix the roof before the storm comes.
