Chapter 11

Sovah guided the Night Stealth into position under the boxy cargo vessel. It barely made the softest thump as the above-board magnetic clamps connected to the underside. If anyone inside the grays’ small vessel heard the sound, they should dismiss it as routine structural noise caused by being dragged through space by a tractor beam for so long.

“Attachment procedure complete.” Smooth as a youngling’s downy wings.

Ava breathed out as if she had been holding her breath. “So, now what?”

“Now, we wait as the bellwether guides it in. After that, we will see.”

“Oh, so you are winging it.” She rolled her eyes, but this time there was a hint of dry humor in their clear blue depths.

“Somehow, that reference makes some sort of sense.” He allowed a small grin. “Thank you for trusting me.”

She laughed. “Hey, you’ve boarded more pirate ships than I have. Besides, at this point, I’m finally willing to admit that all this is way beyond my control.”

The warm glow around his heart expanded. It took great inner strength to recognize one’s lack of experience and step aside as she was. He held her gaze for a moment longer, then refocused on powering down everything except artificial gravity and life-support. Hopefully he would have something of a plan for what came next before they arrived. Anything less would be a betrayal of her trust.

Ten minutes later, the cargo vessel rested on the shiny white metal deck of the hangar bay. And still, no ideas had come to him. What he needed was intel.

“Visual, pan bay.” The view screen image moved, revealing each section of the hangar deck in sequence from starboard to port. Not a gray in sight yet. But the docking crew would arrive as soon as the hangar was repressurized.

Ava leaned forward against her restraints. “Where is everyo—”

Mammoth-sized doors on the port side of the bay parted slowly to reveal a group of at least thirty grays armed with prods. “There they are. Here to unload the merchandise.”

The word left a coat of bitterness on his tongue.

“Bastards.” Ava mumbled the word like it was a curse, which it might be in her language. “What are we going to do?”

“Wait for an opportunity.” He met her gaze. “Which could happen when we least expect it, so stay alert and be ready to follow my command.”

Her eyes narrowed. “Don’t even think about leaving me here.”

“Ava—”

“No.” She turned in her seat to face him. “I still need to be in control of something here, Captain. And I am not one of your soldiers to be ordered around.”

A fact of which he was well aware. “You are a civilian, and my job is to protect you.”

“Screw you, Robo-cop. You’re going to need m—”

BOOM!

The Night Stealth shuddered, and a yelp of surprise came from Ava.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

What in the fiery blazes is happening?

He peered at the view screen. Flashes of light preceded each explosion, equipment on the deck sparked and smoldered—or at least what was left of it did—and
