My compulsive need to look for the edge and live on it has marked me in more ways than I would want to know or try to explain. Never mind the marks it has left on my skin, let me go straight to the bone. Drag out the X rays. Take a quick look. Broken neck, left cheek crushed, nose broken, collarbones broken, ribs on both sides… But that’s enough. That’s too much. I’ve had some experience with too much, and I know what it looks like. The record I have left in my legs alone is too much. I have knees that would make a grown man cry, and my feet are strange.

The little that I have learned about the world, and, more important, that I have learned about myself, has been absurdly expensive, but I have always thought it more than worth the price. There is no other way. The miracle of the world, the miracle of a rebirth of the senses, the miracle of an accepting heart can only be paid for with blood and bone. No other currency has ever been acceptable.

“We are the sum of all our moments,” Thomas Wolfe said. Thank God, I believe that. Nothing is wasted on a writer. If you are lucky, somewhere in the work there will be a place for the unspeakable and the unendurable. Somewhere the bad will fit seamlessly with the good. In my work, nowhere is this truer than in the memoir I wrote of my early years.
