If it weren't for the imminent threats that came from getting off this damned planet or the fact that his mate might leave him for good once they were safe, Flint would be buzzing with excitement and possibility. He could still taste Liza against his lips, even after a night of fitful sleep.

The way she'd responded to his touch was beyond anything he could have hoped. But he couldn't expect her to get over all of her reservations after one kiss.

A dragon could dream, though.

The sarong wrapped around his waist felt like it hid nothing, and every time Liza glanced at him, she blushed. Thankfully his clothes were folded in a clean pile outside the door to their room. He put them on quickly, feeling more like himself once his boots were securely tied to his feet.

Liza kept the dress, though she slipped on the shoes she'd been wearing when he took her from her home. Neither of them wanted to walk barefoot through these caves.

It was a pleasant morning. Nereus and his mate had taken a break from their rutting, and Flint thought he could have called them friends in another life. But this planet didn't care about the same technology he was used to, and they didn't seem to have interstellar communication abilities.

Samantha kissed Nereus when he announced it was time for the three of them to be on their way.

Liza and Flint hadn't spoken more than three words to each other since waking.

Another man, a stronger man, might have called the kiss a mistake. If his could-be mate shut down so completely after a kiss that she invited, he should take the hint. But then he'd catch her looking at him with a soft, wistful expression and hope would flare as strong as dragon fire.

He could have her. Somehow. He just had to figure out the way.

Nereus carried a heavily designed staff with a blue jewel that matched the one embedded in his chest. "Do all … non-wild dragons have jewels like that?" he asked.

"We're called Abyssians," Nereus corrected. "And, no, that's not what separates us from wild dragons. My stone is … something else. And our walk is nowhere near long enough to relay that story." He held his hand up to the gem but pulled away before he touched it.

Intrigued but properly warned off, Flint let the question drop.

Nereus wasn't much of a talker. He pointed out dangers in the territory and instructed them which plants were safe to eat. Other than that, he kept quiet.

Flint and Liza followed his lead.

After several hours of walking, when Flint's legs were starting to ache from the effort, Nereus called a halt. They were at a strange arch covered in indecipherable writing in the tunnel. "Rest here for awhile," Nereus said. "This is the last truly safe place you'll have until you reach your ship."

"End of the line?" Liza asked.

Nereus furrowed his impressive brow but nodded after a moment as he worked out her meaning. "I must leave you here.
