Chapter Nineteen

TARGET PRACTICE

Walking back to the house, Sarah could feel Keir’s gaze upon her. Yet he did not say a word, and the silence that lingered chased goosebumps up and down Sarah’s back. Keir was not the kind of man who hesitated to share his thoughts. He said whatever came to his mind, and she could not help but wonder what thoughts he was so suddenly unwilling to voice. Was he concerned about the man with the rifle? Although she had been terrified upon first spotting him, Sarah had found his easy smile reassuring.

“Who was that?” Sarah finally broke the silence.

Keir shrugged. “That I canna say for certain. He said he was a hunter, out looking for game.”

Sarah chanced a careful glance at him. “You don’t believe him?”

Again, Keir shrugged, not a word passing his lips. They walked on another few steps before he suddenly shifted his gaze to her. “Ye played along very well.”

Sarah tensed at the teasing note in his voice. “Thank you,” she mumbled then, quickening her steps. Oh, will this awkwardness between us never wane!

“Have ye ever used a pistol?” Keir inquired, his large strides easily keeping up with her. “Or a dagger?”

Sarah drew to a halt, her heart pausing in her chest as she looked up at him with wide eyes. “Why?” She looked back down the path they had come. “Do you think that…that—?”

Keir reached out and drew her hands into his, his touch effectively cutting off all rational thought. “Ye needna worry, lass.” He squeezed her hands, an easy smile back on his face. “I’ll teach ye.”

“W-Why?” Sarah stammered, wondering what that odd tingling was she felt where Keir’s hands held hers.

“Just in case.” He pulled her arm through the crook of his, and they turned back down the path. “Tomorrow I’ll need to go back to the inn.”

Sarah felt a cold shiver run down her back at the thought of being on her own. “Do you…Do you think he will come back? The hunter, I mean.”

Keir shook his head. “I wouldna leave if I thought so.”

Sarah exhaled a slow breath, welcoming that sense of relief that washed over her. Yet, she could not help but think that if Keir meant what he said, he would not want to teach her how to wield a weapon, would he? She wanted to ask him but feared the answer, and so later that day, she found herself in the yard with a rifle in her hands.

“’Tis the first time ye’re holding a rifle, isna it?” Keir asked with a grin.

Sarah chuckled, desperate for that sense of ease between them to return. “Is it that obvious?” Indeed, the clunky weapon felt utterly wrong in her hands, and she wished she could simply set it aside.

In two large strides, Keir was suddenly standing at her side, his arms coming around her, his hands showing her how to hold the weapon, setting it against her shoulder. Every single one of Sarah’s muscles tensed, and her breath lodged in her throat as she felt his brush by the side of her neck.
