SIGNS

‘PROBLEMS ARE NOTHING BUT SOLUTIONS, IN A MASK OF FEAR AND ANXIETY.’

e are all born with infinite possibilities. We can become the prime minister of the country, the president or the Pope. So why do we become carpenters, accountants, business people or janitors?

Now don’t get all dramatic on me. All professions are good and respected and necessary. The Pope shouldn’t get more respect than a janitor, since, at the end of the day, they are both human beings. But, let’s face it, would you rather scrub shit stains off the toilet, or dictate the course of millions of people’s lives around the world?

I believe that we are all born equal and will die equal. So then what is it that determines the direction of our lives? What determines our ambition, our skills and our commitment? Is it destiny or fate? Or can we get a bit scientific and blame it on our DNA?

If it is all about the DNA, then you’re f?@king screwed. You can give up trying to fix your life, because you’re already jacked. You can’t change what you’ve been given. If your mom and dad together made an ambitionless ass, then what can you do? But you can help out with the generation that follows yours. You can find the most talented possible partner you can successfully seduce and mate with them. Maybe a mathematician, scientist or astronaut, get the sperm or egg of that genius, and ‘whoops’, you can have a daughter or son with exactly the talents you wanted.

If it were that simple, sperm/eggs would have become more precious then uranium. We would not have to fear the threat of nuclear bombs, we would have to worry about sperm/egg bombs.

But it’s not true, is it? Just look at me. My dad was a tall, handsome, hard-working, honest sugar technologist. I, his third son, am only an average-looking, gorilla shaped, bullshitting marketing professional. Where did the DNA go wrong?

So, if it’s not all in the DNA, then it must be the decisions that you make and the actions that you take that determine the course of your life. It’s hard to think that’s the prime driver. Janitors and street cleaners work harder than most corporate employees that I know, but they don’t seem to reap equal rewards for their efforts. And, you have to admit, we always face strange circumstances in our lives. Moments that make you feel like, ‘Seriously, this is happening this way. Go figure!’

I deeply believe that, starting at a very early age in our lives, we receive signs. We get callings. You may call it coincidence, you may call it fate. I don’t know what to call it. It’s very hard to explain. It’s hard for me to wrap my mind around it.

But why do you meet just those thousand people on the planet, and not the other thousand that you could have possibly met? Why do you end up going to England, and not to Ireland? Why do you manage to
