Chapter Fourteen

CLINT

It took five times longer to change the lightbulb in Hudson’s truck than it would have if I’d done it myself. Performing a drive-by act of service may have been easier, and Hudson would have been none the wiser, but as I suspected, it’d been way more entertaining showing Hudson how to do it.

Passing the time in Hudson’s company was fun. Shocking.

“Here.” Hudson handed me a glass of ice water and sat down on the porch step next to me with a satisfied sigh. “For the record, I don’t want you taking this as a sign that I’m admitting anything to you.”

“What is it then?” I grinned like the debonair gentleman I liked to believe I could be.

“Payment for your services.”

“Which ones? Holding your spitting llama or changing your light?”

“Both.” Hudson took a sip out of her glass. “I’m cheap.”

“Nah. My Ma would say you’re frugal.”

We sat quietly for a moment, letting the world pass by with no us to add any conversation to it. That wasn’t common for me. Usually, I talked to keep the silence at bay, like there was something unsavory about having nothing other than a person’s thoughts to keep them company. It was a skill that could defuse everything from tension to awkwardness, but in the quiet, it seemed like I was getting to know Hudson regardless of our lack of actively speaking. The rhythm of her breathing. The freckles that clung to her smooth skin. The color of her hair when it caught the sunlight. All of it were clues to who Hudson was without a single word being said.

“Can I ask you something?” The question slipped out, even though I knew there was a high likelihood she might turn me down.

“You just did.”

I rolled my eyes, but the grin that appeared at her lame joke made my insides warm like a chocolate chip cookie fresh from the oven. “Okay, can I ask you a couple of questions?”

“Do I have to answer?”

“I guess I’ll leave that up to you. I won’t ask for the combination to your front door keypad or anything.”

She gestured benevolently to me. “Then ask away.”

I set down my glass of water and leaned my elbows on my thighs. “How come you know how to do everything from patch a hole in the drywall to re-plumb a bathroom, but you don’t know how to change a taillight?”

Hudson held her smile, but there was a shift in her countenance. Bleakness flooded her features, and for a moment, it looked like I might have to throw her a lifesaver by backpedaling my question. I could stand not knowing the answer a lot easier than I could stomach watching Hudson be sad, especially knowing I’d induced her melancholy.

Taking a breath, she closed the door on whatever had momentarily distressed her and answered, anyway. “You’re not wrong. I’m sure if I tried, I could probably have figured it out.”

I could tell I was treading on sacred ground, and considered again if I should retreat. Not that I didn’t want to know.
