Time seemed to stutter and slow down as Monica sat in the hall, waiting for this group discussion to end. The past two hours had been excruciatingly slow as well. It was as though time, knowing that she really needed it to get on quickly, had decided to punish her instead by going on at a leisurely pace instead. So really, what her three-hour revision felt like was a whopping six hours instead.
Monica squirmed in her seat and tried to concentrate on what the lead discussant was saying. Nothing stuck. Every word he spoke felt like Latin. She knew the only fix was to just forget about assimilating anything today and just stick to going over the materials extensively later. This was the last time they were meeting this semester anyway. And exams were over and done with.
And all this because she couldn't stop thinking about Gabriel.
Her reaction was just the classic case of the "I can't keep calm" memes that broke the internet some time ago. She couldn't just keep calm. Just after she got to campus this morning, he had texted her that he had a surprise and wanted her to come over to his place right after she was done. No matter how hard she asked for a hint, he refused to reply. That had only just made her even more eager to know what it was. She had texted him to let him know she'd be at his place by 4. Fortunately, it seemed that now they would be done by 3.
So, she spent her whole day thinking up likely scenarios in her head. Could he have gotten her that dress she was oohing about the last time they were at the mall together? Or could it be that he had finally decided not to go so far for the Law degree he wanted to get after college? She didn't think it'd be that. He would have waited till he saw her to tell her that. So what was it?
It crossed her mind that she should have been used to this already. Used to the fact that Gabriel always liked to surprise her. Just last week, he had pulled up in front of her apartment with a band to serenade her. And that was because she 'dared raise her nose snobbishly' to the serenading culture. She wasn't a fan of serenades, but that gesture had been sweet. Like many other things, she had learned to accept that too, and she would miss all of this when he graduated in a few days.
Or she could call Angelica. The other girl might know about Gabriel's surprise. Monica sank back in her chair. . Angelica and Gabriel were friends, but she didn't believe that they were that close. Now that she thought of it, of late Angelica had been drawing closer to her than she was Gabriel. She had found it uncomfortable at first that the other girl was trying to befriend her, but she had eventually accepted Angelica as a friend.
