Chapter 16

Liv ought to have demanded a more active role in the plan. The only thing she’d been instructed to do was wait. Keep training Discordia, yes. Keep her eyes open for any signs of subterfuge within her own stable, of course. Warrington had even stationed some of his own men to watch the estate—though he’d said they would remain hidden, unseen and unheard unless they were needed. Which meant that the only thing remaining was for Liv to lull in inaction.

Even as a child, she’d been unable to sit still.

As a fully-grown woman with her hands on her own reins, it seemed nigh on impossible.

For two long weeks, she’d done exactly as instructed. But now she was chomping at the bit.

She’d taken over most of Annemarie’s chores in the stables herself, much to the child’s chagrin. The little hellion had insisted she could manage, but her tightly wrapped arm suggested otherwise. At least it was another thing to keep herself busy, Liv mused as she dumped grain into the trough.

“That is too much! Echo only gets a half ration on days she doesn’t run!”

Liv gritted her teeth. Her hands were full, so she could not put them emphatically on her hips. She had to satisfy herself with wrinkling her nose.

“If I had known you were going to be such a taskmaster, I would have left you to your mathematics lesson,” Liv said drolly, staring down her wrinkled nose at her daughter.

Annemarie sat on an overturned bucket in front of an empty stall, watching and critiquing her mother’s every move.

“A task poorly done is a race not won,” Annemarie chirped in a singsong voice.

Liv blinked.

“You taught me that, Mama,” Annemarie reminded her.

Liv stuck out her tongue.

“How much grain does Silver Titan receive?” Liv asked, pausing before the next stall. She held a measuring scoop in her right hand and an ever-lightening sack of grain in her other.

“Did he run today?” Annemarie asked.

“Yes,” Liv sighed.

“Light training or hard?”

“You are taunting me, aren’t you?” Liv eyed the child, whose eyes went owlish with innocence, refusing to answer. “It was a light training. Once around the practice course at half-speed.”

Annemarie inclined her head regally. “One and a half portions.”

Liv measured out the grain, then completed two more stalls before reaching the end of the aisle. She dropped the empty grain bag triumphantly in front of Annemarie, still perched on her bucket.

“What else?”

“Sometimes Joseph lets me help with mucking the stalls.” Annemarie smiled sweetly.

“Does he, indeed? What a kind and generous soul Joseph is,” Liv said, making no move. “I think it is time you go inside for your tea.”

Annemarie shifted to her feet, mouth poised to argue. But then her eyes alighted on something over Liv’s shoulder and a wide grin spread over her face. “Mr. Casey!” she squealed.

Annemarie brushed past Liv’s skirts so fast, Liv was left trying not to trip over the bucket she’d sent spinning in her excitement. She threw herself around Brandon’s legs, then seemed to realize such behavior was not befitting of a young lady and executed a wobbling, one-armed curtsey.
