THIRTEEN

It’s difficult to focus on any one moving box inside Drop’s warehouse.

They slide along conveyor belts, through the hands of one person to another, and are loaded into the back of a truck into a sort of shipping box jigsaw puzzle.

As Collins mentioned in Seattle, the operations of a single warehouse are quite a sight.

There is a huge amount of motion throughout the large, open space. The beeps of various pieces of equipment signal the filling and shipping of orders. Towards the end of a long conveyor belt, there are several workers ensuring boxes are packaged well and taping them shut before scanning them. With each beep, a parcel is then dropped into a plastic bin.

Though there’s a lot happening around me, my mind returns to Teri. I need to stop worrying about what she thinks and focus on what I know—I’m getting the job done.

“So…what do you think?” Tony stands tall and proud, his arms crossed as he scans the busy warehouse.

. “It’s pretty impressive. So, when the bin is full of packages it gets moved over to the truck for packing?”

“You got it. And on and on it goes,” he says with a light chuckle. “Is it what you were expecting?”

“I guess I wasn’t sure what to expect when I heard there were robots.”

“Hm,” he says. “Still. Impressive is quite a compliment from you.”

I turn to him—he’s staring back at me, and it makes my stomach do a little twirl. “Is it?”

“Yes. You are difficult to impress. A comment like that from you means a lot.”

The skin on my face is hot, and I can’t help but smile. “Now you’re embarrassing me. We’re done here, right? I can have Collins take me back to the hotel.”

Tony shakes his head and puts an arm on my lower back. “Collins is already waiting for us,” he says, guiding me toward the elevator doors. The touch alone sends tingles up my spine.

I shake it off as he removes his hand. “Waiting for us?”

“Yes. Us.”

Am I imagining his emphasis on the word us? I wonder if it has anything to do with our conversation last night.

We step into the elevator and the doors close as I turn to face them. Tony presses a button to take us back to the first floor, and grins like he’s happy to have a secret from me.

During the trip, I often finished my work before Tony finished his. He would stay behind because Drop is his full-time job, and I imagine he still has a lot on his plate, despite being assigned to work on this project with me. So why is he leaving with me today, and why does this seem like a game to him?

My fingers wrap around the strap of my tote bag as my muscles tense. I can’t seem to stop worrying about losing my job. Even though I’m across the country, social media gives Teri eyes everywhere. If some random person sees me with Tony in public, somehow she finds it. It’s insanity.
