Chapter Seven

SONDARA

Malcolm couldn’t possibly be saying what I thought he was saying. If I was understanding him correctly—and there was a good chance I wasn’t—he was telling me I was the reincarnation of his long-lost love who’d died tragically centuries ago.

The only thing keeping me here was the raw pain that wrenched his face. His fear tangled with mine and twisted my heart. Those dark eyes shined with something I hadn’t ever seen from another human being. I thought I had, but now that I was witnessing the real thing, I knew it was different.

Pure adoration.

“I’m Sondara.” My voice shook. I’d been lightheaded ever since he fed from me, and I wondered if my blood was affecting him the same way. “Not Celeste.”

He dipped his head and wrung his hands together. “I’ve been able to feel your vibration since you were born. And when it hit a low that made my dead heart ache, I knew it was time to call for you. To bring you home. I’m not saying that your new life must include me. I want you to be happy here. I want your dreams to come true.”

My body had gone numb. Every word he said overwhelmed me more. “When I was younger, I struggled with an addiction to getting my cards read. I spent a lot of money on psychics looking for guidance. It was something that always intrigued me and frustrated me. But tonight, I couldn’t stop myself from coming here.” I had no idea why I was telling him this, why I was saying any of this out loud. “Maybe it was because I was looking for you. Like there was an answer only you could give me. Now I have it, and I feel like my entire life has been blown wide open, and if what you’re saying is true, everything until now has been a lie.”

“No it hasn’t. You did exactly what you needed to do to come to this place. Right here, right now.” Malcolm stood and took a tentative step toward me. For the first time, I noticed the tiny drops of dried blood on his chin. My blood. Just like the ice cream stain on my now ruined T-shirt. This man wasn’t perfect either. But he was baring his long dead soul to me, begging me to give it life again.

I wanted to get up and put my arms around him. I wanted all of this to make sense. But I resisted. I wasn’t ready for that yet. I had to sit with the broken pieces of a life that wasn’t mine anymore and be okay with them just like this in case they never went back together the same way. For either of us.

“But I don’t even know who I am.”

“Do you know how many ordinary people go through life, never knowing who they really are? They just do what’s expected of them, never questioning there could be more. But not you. You challenged everything. And you were right.
