Chapter 14

It took an hour for one of the creatures to break free of her hold, a feat that would’ve been impressive had he used it to just keep running away. Instead, the creature went after them—alone—and almost got to Black, seeming to know that he was the leader and the first needing elimination. Lizbeth wasn’t down with that, and it didn’t take her long to command him again and face him squarely.

“You should’ve gone for me first, but I guess it’s inconceivable for your lot to think that I’m the biggest threat here.” She sighed, then glanced at Black. “I don’t want to kill him.”

Black hissed but didn’t protest. “Your choice.”

She appreciated the gesture and reflected on it, not wanting the creature as their prisoner, either. That was just bound to get complicated, especially with the bad blood she could feel in the air. She stiffened when she felt another presence coming into the scene, quiet and unassuming. Rax had been acting that way since they’d escaped, closed in on himself and not even attempting to make amends. But he was paying attention, spotting the creature’s mind earlier and warning them. For some reason, that irked her, but she refused to let personal matters overrun priorities.

She met his gaze, saw that he was already watching her. “Thoughts?”

“Maybe you can erase his. They’re pretty set on destroying us, and I don’t think letting him go with his memories is smart.”

“Very well. I know you’ll forget about us and move on with your life. I know you’ll run in the other direction as fast as you can with your mind blank but your survival instincts intact.”

It took effect immediately, the creature sprinting off and never looking back. Relieved that was done, she communicated with Black to keep walking, knowing they needed to get away from the Great Tribes as much as possible. Again, she felt Rax walking beside her when she took up the front line.

“I have a lighter, too, but it functions differently. Mr. Jumper. It’s supposed to take us back to New York with just a flick, which I’ve been reserving until we found Kinto. Anyway, I can’t use it now. The energies in that land have messed mine up, and it’s affected all my gadgets.”

She bit her tongue, wanting to ask questions. Upset that she wanted to. She nodded.

“Besides, they can’t come with us. I asked. Black doesn’t want a new environment to navigate.”

“Hmm.”

“So how many others have you given amnesia?”

“I can’t remember. But I try to wipe out memories only when people deserve it, whether for their gain or mine.”

“Fascinating.”

“I don’t need your fascination, Rax. Just your cooperation. Make sure there are no ill intents following us.”

She stepped back, unable to be this close to him any longer—not when there was still that underlying electricity between them, not when it still hurt to look at him. There was betrayal upfront, and there was betrayal not meant, and his lack of trust hit harder than any of the ones she’d already anticipated.
