CHAPTER 21

ONLY A HANDFUL OF MEN went with Lord Strongheart. The Johansen twins were two of the best trackers Victor had, and they were relentless once they set on the trail of their prey. They came from the line of Sergeant Johansen, one of the trekkers who founded Daniel’s Fork. He had been a hunter and tracker also. It was in the bloodline’s genes.

Victor wished Sebastian, his trusted young friend and great tracker, was here also, but he had not come on this trip. In the handpicked group were the three best target shooters Daniel’s Fork had. Each one could hit a rabbit at one hundred feet with the compact crossbow. If they could see it, they could hit it.

Victor also brought along Old Hummer, a seasoned veteran of many wilder campaigns and a proven stealth killer. He could quickly and efficiently take out a circle of men in seconds flat and never a sound made to warn others. That also was Victor’s skill. Hummer was the one who taught him all he knew of stealth and assassination.

Seven men to take a girl from a group which probably numbered thirty. Victor knew this would have to be a covert rescue. Wilders were great at escaping, and they would not think twice about cutting the girl’s throat if forced to leave her behind.

They were vicious, cruel, and destructive. They owned nothing but their freedom and the hunger to plunder and consume. Wilders did not have families or children. They raped, pillaged, and burned.

Their haunts were the wild, dark places such as caves in mountains and hills, the long abandoned, rat-infested ruins of crumbling towns. In the lost cities, water-flooded subway tunnels and dark, cavernous underground stations were home to the worst of wilders.

The ones who took Setiyah were easy to track. They numbered at least twenty, and half that many were killed in the raid. A group of thirty raided the camp, but Victor knew the entire group had not been sent out. There were always men left behind to guard the nest.

The ones returning home were not worried about leaving tracks, probably because they had never been attacked in retaliation. When wilders raided, they struck fast and disappeared quickly. To follow them back to their lair was suicide, but Victor felt suicidal.

The Johansen twins stopped and signaled their lord over. On the ground, almost totally covered by waist-high brush and grass, was the body of a man. His eyes stared up with the blank, empty stare of the dead. The layers of filthy clothing were stained dark with dried blood. Pale white feet looked incongruously out of place sticking out of his filthy trousers.

“He was wounded during the raid and didn’t make it home,” whispered Luke Johansen. Victor knew him from his brother by the small scar over his left eyebrow. “His friends left him where he fell off his mount. Wilders never bother burying their dead. They just strip them of anything valuable, in this case, the boots. The body is left to the wild animals.
