Chapter Thirteen

He snatched the dirk from her belt before she thought to grab hold of it. “Would you become a thief now, Seana?” he asked, with a softness that belied the heat of his anger. “I’d not expected you to run.”

Incensed that he had caught her, Seana twisted around within his loose hold and slapped him. “You’re a bastard, Jamie!” she spat.

He caught hold of her hair, forcing her head back, and held her upper arm with the other hand until he felt skin and muscle give way to bone.

Despite the stinging of her palm from the force of her slap, Seana raised her hand to him again.

“Dare it, Seana,” he said, his words grating from between clenched teeth. “Just dare to raise your hand to me again.”

“None but a coward would raise his hand to a woman.”

“Aye, and who would know that better than a MacKay?” he leaned close to whisper. Micheil closed his eyes briefly against the blinding rage that swept over him.

“You lie, Jamie!”

His grip on her arm tightened until she cried out, and even then he only eased his hold, but did not release her.

“I lie? The whole of the north Highlands knows your own brother treated Bridget nic Gunn so gently that none but her family have seen her face.”

His voice and his words were whiplashes. “Nay. ’Tis not true. Liam would never raise his hand to her. He loved her! You lie!”

Micheil released her hair, only to grab hold of her other arm and haul her up against him. “The truth, by all I hold dear!” He shook her to make her cease her screaming denial.

Her stomach roiled with sickness. It could not be true. Liam had loved his wife. She had left him. She had denied their marriage and refused to return. She’d listen to no more poison from Jamie’s lips.

“And you’re no better than that skulking coward you call brother. I know why you yielded to me, Seana. You’d play the harlot for any man who’d take you home.”

“A harlot?” she repeated in a stunned voice. “Aye. But first I had to find a fool of a man to teach me.” His biting grip on her arms made her cry out again. The moonlight cast shadows, and enough light for her to see the scowling fury that stamped his features. Seana grew quiet as terror took hold.

Her heart pounded until she thought it would burst. She could not even close her eyes against him. Not a sign did she see of his intent. He shoved her roughly from him. She stumbled, but managed to keep her balance, and stood there, rubbing her arms.

His move to the dirk brought a catch at her chest and a gasp. Sweet heaven! Did he intend to kill her? But he bent swiftly to tuck it in his boot.

“Go inside, Seana.”

She refused to feel compassion at his weary tone. Just as she refused to obey him.

“Stubborn to the end. This is not Breac, but his near-twin, Ciotach. Neither of the braw beasties would let you ride them.
