CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

The phone woke Bryan, and he pushed up in the bed, blinking as he took in the space.

Right.

He was in a hotel room in Berlin. Daylight shone through the crack between the drawn curtains.

The clock on the bedside table told him it was after eleven. He’d slept almost seven hours.

The phone rang again, and he snatched the handset. “Hello?”

“It’s me.” Sophie’s voice sounded a lot more awake than his did. “I didn’t write down your cell phone number, so…”

“Oh, right.” He stretched and yawned. “Did you get any sleep?”

“Yeah. I’ve been awake for a little while. Took a shower. I thought you might want to do the same before Aaron gets here. Didn’t he say noon?”

“Yeah. Hold on.” Bryan grabbed his cell and checked the notifications. He’d silenced it before they left Aaron and Mary’s house. There’d been no calls from Aaron, which meant either the older man was on his way, or something terrible had happened to him. Bryan decided to assume the best.

There were—he scrolled down—five missed calls from Michael.

“No news from Aaron. I’ll come get you in a few.” He ended the call and dialed Michael, who answered before the first ring stopped.

“You okay?”

“Are you?” Bryan asked. Demanded was maybe the better word. “What happened?”

“Yeah… I can’t tell you.”

Of course he couldn’t.

“You’re okay? Everybody’s okay?” Bryan asked.

“One in the hospital, but he’ll recover.”

Hospital. Meaning Michael had been on an op, and maybe it had gone wrong. Certainly, it’d been dangerous.

“You’re okay, though?” Bryan clarified. “Not injured?”

“I’m fine, Bryan. Are you? What’s going on?”

“We’re in Berlin.” He gave his brother the short version of what had happened, starting with the break-in at the museum. Michael listened, never interrupting. Never questioning. Never second-guessing decisions.

Bryan appreciated that. “We got here early this morning,” Bryan said, “and I just woke up.”

“Okay.” There was a long, long pause. Then, “Thank God you’re all right. If anything had happened to you…” Did Bryan hear emotion in his brother’s words? “Bro, I would not have sent you over there if I’d had any idea you’d be in danger. I thought it would be simple.”

“I know. It worked out.”

“I’m not sure when we’ll be able to look into what you’ve learned. Brock and I already had it out about the break-in.”

“Wait. You knew?”

“Not as it was happening, but after. Where’s the item?”

“London.” Bryan explained how that had come about.

“Get me an address ASAP. We’ll have someone fetch it.”

“And smooth things over with the museum so Sophie doesn’t lose her job?”

“I’ll see what I can do.”

“A man died. And they think she did it. You need to—”

“I’ll take care of it. For now, her best bet is to stay out of sight.”

“Michael, she was just trying—“

“I know.” The words came out too loud, frustrated. Michael took a breath. “I can only do what I can do. It’ll be taken care of. I just don’t know when exactly.”

Bryan didn’t like that answer but doubted get a better one. “I figured out the string of numbers.”

“You did? Tell me.
