Chapter 13

Brian

Makayla came floating into the room, wearing a royal blue workout short set. The shorts came up right under her swollen ass. Each step she took toward me made me feel like the luckiest man in the world. Luck had nothing to do with this; it was all favor. God’s favor in my life allowed me to find my first love again after so many years, and everyone couldn’t say the same thing.

“She ain’t goin’ nowhere, boy. You can take your eyes off her for two minutes.” Gran was smiling up at me but talking jumbo gumbo. Didn’t she know I was like a moth to a flame when it came to Kay? I tried to give her space but my spirit never felt right without her, and now that she was back, I had to keep that wave of contentment going.

“Stop hatin’, lady. You know how foolish you used to be for Pops? I’m doing what y’all showed me.” Her smile was filled with grief.

“I’m sorry to tease you, Gran. I miss him too. He has missed out on so much. I want him to experience life with us.” I grabbed her hand, praying I could send her all the strength she needed.

“It’s all right, boy. You got that crap from him, anyway. Always ’round here joking and telling folks off. Go and grab our food so we ladies can chat and catch up. You hogged up all Miss Mommas’s time; I want some with her, too.” First, she talked shit, and now she was tryna steal my lady. Protesting would get me in trouble, so I went on with my business in the kitchen, smiling every time my two hearts cackled at something together. They were good for each other and able to provide a piece of their heart that each one had been missing. Makayla got a mother figure and Gran gained a new daughter.

We ate and shared stories about the summer we met and it was a blissful time. Hand in hand, I dragged Makayla through the house, showing her everything from the home theater to the personal gym.

We had an outdoor training space filled with weapons and equipment that my grandfather built for my gran once he saved her from an abusive ex. To my knowledge, it hadn’t been in use for quite some time. It also had a safe house built inside in case one ever needed to escape.

We headed straight for the mats and gloves so I could teach Baby Girl how to handle her own. I was sure she knew how to fight a woman but I needed her to know how to take down a man in case she was alone and needed to eliminate a threat. We walked into the space and the person warming up the punching bag knocked the wind out of me.

“Ash… Asha, is that you?” I walked up to her but she couldn’t hear me because she had headphones in. I motioned for Kay to stay behind a few paces and tapped Asha on the shoulder.
