Shay had walked home with me after school several times, and I could really feel our friendship starting to build. We began working off each other just how Eme and I had in Liberty. Not that anyone could ever replace Eme; nope, that wasn’t ever going to happen just as I had hoped she wouldn’t ever replace me. She was the only person at Liberty High who knew what happened with Bryan and was there for me just as I knew she would be.
It didn’t take a rocket scientist to see that I wasn’t normal when it came to guys. Shay had seen me around other guys at school and observed me trying to read my signs. She had asked me nonchalantly but not straight out what was going on … but didn’t push when I would change the subject. Something was wrong with me, and I was fully aware. I knew that I wasn’t going to forget what happened, but I didn’t want it cutting into me constantly. These were supposed to be the most carefree times of our lives, and they were anything but. I mean, not to state the obvious, with my family life not being anything close to ideal but now this.
Every time I got in a close vicinity of a guy, my nerves wreaked havoc on my system. It wasn’t something that I felt I could control. He could be simply just saying hi to me or talking to Shay when I was beside her.
“Elise … what in the hell is going on? Why do you act that way around guys? Do you not like guys?”
“Yes, I like guys! Good God.” I smirked trying to play it off.
“Well, you have a funny way of showing it. Scott, Michael, and Chris have all asked me what was ‘up your butt.’ I guess you give them a major attitude or walk away when they are just trying to be nice.”
“It’s a long story and not one we are going to talk about here … I’m just adjusting … give me some time.” I resorted to that explanation hoping that would hold her over.
“Look …” She turned to face me being sincere. “I know things were hard for you in Liberty, and I know you were sent here for a reason … you had to be … since you came out of nowhere when school had just started. I just don’t want you to push people away. Most of the people who live here in Humble are the best people you will ever meet. Me included.” She smiled trying to make me laugh.
“I see that, Shay. I’ll get there. I promise.”
“Okay … by the way, we are going on a hike this weekend. We do it a couple of times every year. It’s a blast.”
“Just us two?”
“No, a whole group of people. Don’t worry; it will be boys and girls. And no, you won’t have to be alone with anyone.”
She was apparently reading my mind or the look of panic on my face must have spoken volumes.
