His head dropped back and stared up at the ceiling. There it was. The same selfless spirit he’d witnessed over and over again. He hurt her by not introducing her to his family, and she wanted to make things better for him.

Yeah, the steel cage around his heart? Gone, obliterated into nothingness. A zero with the rims kicked off. The hope he’d been missing? Growing. Flourishing. Rooting deep within the recesses of his being. He was not worthy of her, but no way was he letting go of her without a fight. Now, he had to figure out how to explain his concerns regarding his sister.

“It’s Wrynn.” There, he said it, but from the expression on her face, he knew she needed more. “She’s, gah, what’s the right word? Depressed? No, that’s nowhere near even strong enough.” His mind scrambled to come up with the right way to say what he meant, and he remembered what she told him about her mom.

“Your mom and Seth’s death.” She flinched, and he wrapped his arms around her. “It’s like that for Wrynn, but even worse. She functions, but just barely. At times, it’s like we lost her when we lost Tripp.”

Elizabeth’s eyes searched his face. “Okay, I get that. You told me this a while ago.” Her words were slow and measured. “What I don’t understand is what that has to do with you and me, and why you never mention wanting me to meet your family.” He felt her take a deep breath as she pushed her face into his neck. “I’ve tried to be patient. Tried not to let it hurt me. But Liam, what you have to realize is this. You can’t treat me like a treasure one minute, and then try to bury me in the sand the next. Your words make me feel like I’m important to you, but your actions confuse me. I can’t help but think something’s wrong with me, and you’re afraid your family won’t like me.”

Frustration threatened to strangle him. How did he make her understand his wariness had nothing to do with her and everything to do with the precarious ledge Wrynn existed on every day?

“It’s not you, I promise. I know my family will love you, but ...” His hands cradled her jaw, and he gently lifted until her eyes met his. “I’ll lay this out as best I can, but I need you to understand what we’re up against. Wrynn is beyond fragile, beyond hanging on by a thread.

“See, when Tripp died, half of her literally died, too, and without him, I don’t know that she’ll ever be complete again. You hear people throw around the term soul mate, but with those two, it wasn’t just an expression. It was a fact.

“I wish you could have seen them together. They spoke without words. Finished each other’s thoughts and sentences. I swear they could read each other’s minds. When one was sick, the other physically felt it. When one was hurt, the other experienced pain.
