Jake really was a bit pushy. Some of it reminded me of my father, but the biggest difference was that Jake pushed me toward my goals, whereas Dad pushed me toward his own.

Things got really busy for me after that night at Todd’s. Most days, I divided my time between Tom and the construction company. I found everything Tom was teaching me to be intriguing. I mean, he was old school, even proudly so. His software had been developed in the early two thousands and likely way outdated by now, but it did the job well enough.

Tom also taught me a few things about drafting, which he did longhand. I was certain some software program could do it a lot quicker, but I knew I’d learn about that in school. What I was learning from Tom felt important and relevant to my chosen profession, and I tried to absorb as much of his knowledge and experience as I could.

One day, Tom announced we’d be going on a field trip and then drove me around the county, pointing out examples of different house styles and even visiting a few buildings he’d designed himself over the years. I especially loved the old Victorian structures around this part of the country. Whether they be the huge plantation style homes like Todd and Ash lived in, or the smaller homes called dogtrots, which were basically long houses with a huge open breezeway in between, I found all of it interesting.

Meanwhile, Todd and Linc had begun pulling me into discussions that involved the utilization of the drafts and plans, letting me see what it was like to turn them into reality.

Jake and I were definitely getting closer, too. We went out almost every Friday night, sometimes to a nice restaurant or to a movie, but as the weather warmed up, we spent more of those Friday nights walking or picnicking.

When I finally received an acceptance letter from Vanderbilt that spring, I almost collapsed in relief. I’d done the budget over and over in my head, and although the money Allen had given me from his portion of our grandparents’ trust would cover most of Vanderbilt’s tuition, it wouldn’t cover all the costs. I wouldn’t have a choice in that I’d have to take out at least a few student loans.

I’d also managed to convince Todd he needed to put me on the payroll, so at least during the summer, I’d be making some money to supplement the costs of going to school.

It shocked me that the first person I wanted to tell when I opened my acceptance letter was Jake. I, of course, wanted to overthink that. But instead, I grabbed my phone and pushed the call button on his number and waited for him to pick up.

“Hello, Lance. Is anything wrong?” he asked, causing me to chuckle. I rarely called him and never during the day like this, preferring to text instead, so it made sense he’d be concerned.

“No, I just got some good news and wanted to share it with you.
