Alexei
The back of my neck is tingling with warning. That isnât the boat Lukas described to me. Not even close. And heâs not the sort to embellish this kind of stuff. How many vodkas he can shoot? Yeah, heâs a lightweight drinker, but not the way he talks about it.
This though? This has fuck up written all over it. And I have a clue whoâs behind it when I glance over my shoulder to see two goons getting out of a black SUV. Mia called it. But thatâs not going to keep her safe, and right now thatâs my number one concern.
I glance into the water. Itâs high tide so it should be deep enough for her. âMia,â I say as quietly and calmly as I can, âI want you to jump off the dock and swim under it. Wait until everyone is gone before coming out. Got it?â
âWhy would I want to do that?â Sheâs bewildered until she turns. âOh. Who are they?â
âBad guys.â I donât move my lips, the stare down with the foreign agents having already begun.
âThen you need my help,â Mia insists.
âJump, Mia. Now.â
Instead she edges closer to my side. I donât like this and Iâm torn about what to do about it. If Mia were an innocent bystander, Iâd push her off the dock and apologize later. If I were still alive to do so. That anyone tracked me here means they probably already know about her and what she means to me. And itâs not like I have any weapons on me. I havenât carried one in years. Iâm attached to a cyber warfare unit and all the nasty stuff takes place with keystrokes not bullets. E-battles can be just as deadly in a different way, but itâs not something I can whip up and deploy here.
âFuck. Mia, please.â I push her behind me as best I can.
She doesnât say anything, just gasps when the two men who are both sporting white blond crew cuts with dead looking eyes walk up to us.
The goon on the right slaps me on the shoulder. âAlexei, my old friend. So glad you could make it.â The sting wouldnât have even been noticeable if I hadnât been anticipating it. Fuck. I feel all my worries fading away as the sunlight sparkles on the water. So pretty. Fuck!
Faintly, I hear Miaâs voice going strident. Canât she see what a beautiful day it is? She should be singing and laughing on the beach. I turn to tell her that, but I canât seem to move my head.
âNo, heâs not going anywhere without me. What did you do to him?â Her words wash over me. My Mia, so beautiful.
The two Russian agents lead me back to the SUV. Iâm not unconscious, but I might as well be because I donât seem to care about anything besides watching the waves. A tiny part of my brain is panicking, but I canât figure out why. Mia trails behind. Didnât I tell her to go for a swim? She should do that.
