Chapter Six

“You never give up, do you?” Sunny asked, frowning.

“Look on it as protecting my investment.”

“Your investment? Brides and Bows is my boutique.”

“And I hold the note on it. If this party is our last shot and nothing turns up, I’ll foreclose. Then Brides and Bows will be a part of Wright Associates,” Tanner said coolly.

He didn’t believe in mixing business with anything.

“I’ve introduced you to two appropriate women,” she protested. “It’s not fair that you’ll take my business.”

“That’s what we’re discussing, Sunny, business. From a logical point, I’ve already given you more time and latitude than is justified. My company made you a loan. You have not repaid it. You owe me.”

She stuck her feet into her shoes.

“I’m doing the best I can,” she muttered, snagging her purse and slipping the strap on her shoulder.

Tossing her head, she faced him from across the office.

“Come at eight. But don’t come in a suit or I won’t let you in.”

“Dictating terms?” he asked softly.

“You’re dern tooting. After you have your say about my accounting methods, which I’m sure you'll find a total mess, I want more discussion on the qualities of this wife of your dreams. If the party is my last shot for Brides and Bows, I have to make it a success. Eight o’clock, and no suit.”

She made an exit worthy of a stage actress, he thought as he watched her sail from the office. The door almost slammed, but at the last second Sunny apparently had second thoughts. She closed it quietly. The click when the latch engaged sounded loud as he stared after her, torn between amusement and frustration.

He hadn’t run the gamut of so many emotions in more than a decade, if ever. Yet around Sunny, he was subjected to a full barrage. He slapped the checkbook against his palm again and wondered why he was willing to put up with so much from her.

If his mother had remained, would his parents have had more children? Would he have had a sister like Sunny? Not at all likely, not living where he’d grown up. Children there acquired a hard edge early. They didn’t live with a rosy view of life, they faced reality as babies. Sunny would never survive in such a place. And he hoped she never even visited.

Tanner called Stuart to come for the checkbook and finish his analysis of the records for Brides and Bows. The accountant sighed softly when handed the checkbook but made no comment.

“I want it by tomorrow at five,” Tanner said as dismissal.

“No problem, boss. At least I hope not. You’ll have everything on your desk before five.”

Tanner glanced at his watch. It was scarcely three. He had over twenty-nine hours before he’d see Sunny again. Time he needed to spend on work, not on thinking about a blond fireball who set his emotions churning.
