Chapter 17

She felt herself being lifted in the darkness, though she was too weak to fight back. Something went around her wrists and she tried to pull them free to no avail. The rope on her wrists only tightened further and she cried out in pain.

“I paid a hefty sum for an unused child,” the voice said, and she felt pain across her face again. “I wanted a boy, but you don’t look much like a woman yet,” the voice continued.

She felt something wet and slick slide across her bare shoulder.

“I think I’ll take you as both and see which I like better.”

She bucked against the hands that touched her, a scream of terror wrenching from her. Pain flashed across her temple and she was lost to the darkness.

She could feel something hard pressing between her legs, attempting entry. She groaned, trying to fight back, but the ropes tightened around her wrists again. Her fingers were numb.

She felt a heavy weight on her, something moving back and forth, and muffled curses as the thing between her legs attempted to enter her again. The weight left her and she heard another voice in the darkness. She heard flesh hitting flesh, the crunch of bone that accompanied the sound, and the grunts of men fighting. Her head rolled back, the darkness was too strong to resist. She welcomed the silence it brought and let herself fall into the black.

“Posy, wake up.”

Strong hands shook her as she came back to the world. Thinking it was the first man again, she began to fight, striking out blindly. She felt her hand connect to flesh, the muffled grunt of pain pulling her towards awareness, but she continued to fight, using her fists and feet to push against her attacker.

“Posy, it’s me,” the voice implored, and she felt a spark of recognition in her mind. “You’re having a nightmare, love. Wake up!” Her eyes flashed open, seeing Jonathan’s face hovering above her. His lip was bleeding, but all she could see was worry in his eyes.

“Jonathan?” her voice sounded hoarse and unused.

“Thank god,” he sighed, gripping her wrists in front of her to prevent her from striking out again. “You’re safe, Posy,” he murmured as her body went slack. “It was just a d-dream.”

“Did I...” she paused, trying to reach up to touch his lip.

“I’m fine,” he told her, releasing her wrists and pulling her into his lap. “You’re fine.”

“Where are we?” she asked, her mind still groggy from the dredges of the nightmare.

“We’re at the d-duke’s house next to your uncle’s estate in Ireland,” he told her, stroking her hair. “We were wed yesterday.”

“I was back in London,” she murmured, her eyes filling with tears. “When I was a child. I was with Maybourne.”

“Shh,” he told her. “You d-don’t need to speak of it.”

“He was trying to rape me,” she whispered, her breath hitching. “He’d beaten me and tied me, naked, to the bedpost. He was trying to rape me,” she repeated as tears fell from her eyes.
