Something Strange

It was well past midnight when there was a knock at the door. Diamond would usually bark, but she ran away a few days ago, so Terry and I weren’t afforded that luxury.

Terry grabbed his gun and headed to the front door with me not too far behind. He got to the door before me, so I could read his body language and tell there wasn’t a threat at the door, but there was definitely an inconvenience. He placed the gun on the sofa. While he bent down, I saw a woman standing there in a nursing fit. She had bone straight hair with brown, smooth skin. Her brows were perfectly shaded, and her baby hairs were laid. She had real baby hairs, not the forced ones. This woman was beautiful. Looked to have some Indian somewhere in her bloodline.

“What’s going on?” I asked, moving closer to the door. That’s when I saw Diamond sitting behind the girl.

“This is my ex-girlfriend, Crystal. Diamond ran to her house, and she was just bringing her back,” Terry said as he walked around Crystal and snatched Diamond by the collar. “Get yo’ ass in this house.”

Diamond cried out in pain as he pinched her ear. She ran past me and laid low in her cage.

“She couldn’t just wait until normal hours to bring her back?” I asked, tightening my robe.

Terry looked at me like, don’t do this shit right now.

“I work overnight, and I will be busy most of the day when I’m not sleeping, so I decided to bring her on my lunch break.”

Terry intervened. Standing in the middle of us, he said, “Thanks, Crystal. I owe you one.” He tried to close the door, but she placed her palm on the door.

“Icis is gone again,” she said.

“Who’s Icis?” I wanted to know.

“It’s his mother.” The disgusted look on her face made me want to slap her. It’s like she was mad that I didn’t know his mama’s name. He didn’t like talking about his mother or father. What was I supposed to do? Beat it out of him?

“I was talking to my man.”

She smirked and shook her head. She was hurt to see me there. The break-up must have been more recent than I thought. “Your man, huh?” She glanced over at Terry, who looked tired and annoyed.

“Crystal, I’ll handle it. Thanks for bringing Diamond.”

“You’ll handle what?!”

“Spin, go the FUCK to bed before you piss me off. She brought me my damn dog. What’s the problem? You act like I’m fucking the bitch.”

“Bitch?” She folded her arms and looked at him as if she’d never heard him say that to her before. I noticed she never raised her voice. She handled my man with too much care, and I didn’t like that. She was very gentle with him.

“You know I ain’t mean it like that.”

“Yes, the fuck you did!” I screamed at him.

She backed away and took a good look at us. “Is that my robe?”

I looked down at the robe I was wearing.
