If You Go

▶ Getting There: Baxter State Park is approximately 160 miles north of Portland, which is served by many carriers, including Delta (800-221-1212; www.delta.com) and United (800-864-8331; www.united.com).

▶ Best Time to Visit: June through mid-October is the prime rock climbing season here. You’ll need to check in with rangers early on the morning of your climb; latecomers may be turned away.

▶ Level of Difficulty: Armadillo is a 5.7+, though its exposure belies its technical challenges. There are a range of other traditional climbs in the South and the North.

▶ Guides: Several outfitters offer guided climbs on Mount Katahdin, including Synnott Mountain Guides (603-733-8416; www.newhampshireclimbing.com).

▶ Accommodations: There are ten campgrounds in Baxter State Park (www.baxterstatepark.org), some (like Chimney Pond) with lean-tos. The Katahdin Chamber of Commerce (www.katahdinmaine.com) lists motel options in surrounding towns like Millinocket.
