Chapter 14

Edric had not expected to awaken with a sword at his throat. He blinked his eyes open to see Sir Hugo looking down at him, his customary sneer on his face. All was silent, all was still, only the flickering of a candle to throw any light onto the scene. Edric reached for his blade, but Sir Hugo shook his head, his sword placed an inch closer to Edric’s neck.

“I have already taken that,” the rogue knight replied. “Such a blade does not belong in the hands of one such as you. Not that it will matter. If you have any final words…”

Glaring up at his would-be assassin, Edric replied, “I will be avenged.”

“You assume that there will be anyone left alive who cares. I do not.”

Shaking his head, Edric said, “I did not think that even you were capable of such treachery as this. Deserting the castle and leaving these people to die. I thought you wanted them as your subjects?”

“I seek to bathe my blade in Saracen blood. If you had been a true warrior, you might have ridden at my side. Instead, you will simply be the first to die. Prepare your soul for God, and may he have mercy upon it.”

Sir Hugo raised his sword, ready to strike, but Edric was faster, kicking out with his legs, sending the knight falling backwards, the sword clanking into the palisade by his side, stuck fast into the wood. Sir Hugo, weighed down by armor, toppled over the side, down onto the roof of the woodstore below, rolling ignominiously to the courtyard, where one of the sellswords raced over to help him up, a man that Edric had placed on guard duty. He looked up at the ramparts, eyes widening as he realized that nobody was left on watch and struggled to his feet.

“We are betrayed!” Edric yelled, and Sir Hugo started toward the steps, only for the sellsword to hold him back, urging him towards the stable. A half dozen horses were being brought out by Sir Amalric, and as the rest of the garrison struggled from their slumber, Edric heard the dreadful sound of the gates being swung open, Sir Hugo’s men opening the path for their escape, heedless of the danger he was exposing the garrison to.

“No!” Edric cried, racing for the steps, but he was too late. The six renegades had mounted their horses and were charging into the darkness beyond, swords high in the air, screaming war chants that instantly attracted the attention of the besieging force. Falco raced from the hall, pulling on his mail, and froze for a second as he saw the gates open, saw torches held high in the distance as the besieging army opted to take advantage of the treachery of Sir Hugo and the others.

 “What…”

“Come!” Edric said. “We must close the doors, or all is lost!” Edric raced for the heavy wooden gates, pushing with all his might on the left while Falco took the right, struggling against their weight.
