Picking up the phone, I tap the screen and place it to my ear. I don't worry about it being too early. Both aunts are up before the sun every morning.

"Josephine." Aunt Maggie answers on the second ring and her addressing me by my full name causes a smile to tug at my lips. It's her way of letting me know she's not happy about my going so long without calling her back.

"Hi, Aunt Maggie."

"Don't you Aunt Maggie me," she fires back.

"I know, I know. But things have been kind of…uh…crazy here."

"What's going on?" Her tone goes from annoyed to concerned.

"Are you sitting down?" I ask.

"Oh, lord. Is everything okay with Sawyer?"

I'm quick to reassure, "Yeah. Sawyer is fine."

"Okaaay," Aunt Maggie draws out. "What's going on, Jo?"

I take a deep breath. "I ran into Sawyer's father the other day." I wait for a beat for my aunt's reaction.

"Oh, dear. I think I do need to sit down."

I hear some shuffling through the line before my aunt continues. "You saw her father?"

"Yes. He lives here. In New Orleans."

"My, that's quite a coincidence."

"You're telling me," I sigh.

"What happened when you saw him?"

"Let's just say things did not go well."

"I'll bet. I'm sure you gave him a verbal beatdown."

"Not exactly. More like it was the other way around. Well, the first time, not so much. It was more of a shock. Especially considering he came into the hospital to have a stab wound treated, and he was my patient. The second time I saw him was just as bad."

I spend the next few minutes giving Aunt Maggie a play-by-play of each encounter I’ve had with Sawyer.

"You mean to tell me that son of a bitch had the nerve to treat you like you're the dirt beneath the bottom of his shoes, when he's the one who left without letting you explain what really happened back then?" Aunt Maggie rants. I knew she would react like this. Aunt Maggie is as protective as they come. "I think Aunt June and I need to make a trip down to New Orleans." I hear her shout over the phone, "June! We're going to New Orleans!"

"Aunt Maggie, no!" I rush out. "You and Aunt June don't need to come here. I'm handling things."

"Yeah, well, you can handle things with some back-up."

"Please, Aunt Maggie. This is something I need to do on my own. I love you for wanting to have my back, but I'm not the same scared eighteen-year-old I used to be. I'm stronger now. I can handle Sawyer Huntington."

Aunt Maggie is quiet for a long moment. "I know you're strong, Jo. I didn't think you weren't. I'm proud of the woman you are today, and you are an amazing mother."

"Thank you," I choke out. "I wouldn't be who I am without you, Aunt Maggie."

"You have always been the beautiful, strong person you are, Jo. I was just there to hold your hand along the way."

"I love you, Aunt Maggie."

"I love you too, Jo. Promise me you'll keep me updated.
