Metaethics and Gendered Voices

While attempting to provide a feminist overview of how to address the trio of difficulties we have demarcated, one very large question presents itself: why would we consider these matters to be questions of ethics? In other words, it could be argued that sex-selective abortion, early marriage and ritual sequestration are not only cultural matters, but simply matters of custom or even etiquette in the cultures in question, and hence not susceptible to ethical analysis. It is interesting to note, in passing, that many beginning texts in ethics often have a section that tries to demarcate the ethical from other matters of everyday concern. In a passage leading to an excision from John Hartland-Swann on “The Moral and the Non-Moral,” Tom Beauchamp engages in analysis of these very areas. He writes:

[An] answer to this question [of what is constitutive of the moral] is that many . . . social institutions, especially law and etiquette, can be distinguished from morality only by the degree of their social importance, and that these institutions do not differ in kind or in substantive content.[18]
