What happens is people feel a painful trigger and then blame someone else for it. We include someone else in the mix. When really, itâs between you and the trigger.
How to Use the Relationship Trigger
Youâve just been triggered by a relationship. You feel overwhelmed by it. You have that feeling in the pit of your stomach or chest area, you canât focus, and you feel like the rugâs been pulled from under you. Now is the time to do this process.
1. Get to a safe space where you can close your eyes. Grab a pillow or cushion or even a soft toy.
2. Hold the pillow against where you are feeling the anxiety â this itself will provide relief.
3. Imagine this cushion is your inner child Self, who wants to be loved and held. Remember to breathe deeply in and out as you hold this child â this version of you. You are holding âyouâ until you feel relief. If you find your mind trying to run away with your thoughts, just come back to holding the child within. Come back to the person within you. Comfort this person. Give yourself â that person â your undivided attention.
4. Every time you think of the person or people who are the reason for you doing this process â those people that donât make you feel good â just throw an imaginary blanket over them and come back to giving yourself undivided attention. Itâs OK to feel as you feel. Turn your back on those other people or stories and embrace the child within. Youâre abandoning yourself by going into stories about them â instead, choose you.
5. Notice how the mind wants to go outside and go into stories about âthemâ (the other person). But this is about you. This is about holding yourself and leaving all the stories about the world aside. Leave the stories out of it, cover them with the blanket of clouds and just hold yourself â words arenât necessary.
6. Keep doing this process until you feel soothed back into your Real Self. Once you feel relief, which could take a few minutes or longer, the process is done, and you can get up and go on with your day.
