Clayton wanted to kiss Natalie.
There. He said it. Or at least thought it.
She was smart and funny and kind, but also feisty, and he knew she wouldnât let him get away with crap. And she loved Emma.
And she was Danaâs sister. Which made her off limits. And made every idea currently going through his head dangerous and wrong.
But the ideas were there. And they werenât going away any time soon.
Natalie didnât look away, instead tugging on the jacket, like she had a nervous twitch. She was moving in closer, and Clayton wanted nothing more than to close the gap.
All he had to do was shift a couple of inches.
And then Emma cried. Whimpered, actually. It was hardly a sound at all.
But it was enough to break the spell that bound them.
Natalie was the first to break eye contact. Her gaze dropped, and she jumped to her feet, shaking her legs like they had fallen asleep.
âWe should probably get back to the party,â she said, her voice soft and breathless. âYou are the guest of honor, after all.â
Clayton chuckled, trying to act normal. Like everything was the same as it had been five minutes earlier. He stood and stretched his back. âEmma is the guest of honor, Iâm just the bodyguard. Anyone wants to get close to her, they have to go through me first.â
One side of Natalieâs lips quirked up in their signature way, and Clayton almost lost it and took her in his arms right then and there. âAnd that is why all of these women are after you.â
âIs that right?â
She nodded and started back toward the party. âYouâre different than I expected, you know. I didnât give you a fair chance this morning.â
Had it only been that morning? It felt like a lifetime ago.
Claytonâs arms felt heavy as he lugged Emmaâs carrier back to where the party was still going strong.
âWhat did you think Iâd be like?â
Natalie paused mid-step and turned toward him. âHonestly, I thought you were here to get rid of Emma. To pawn her off on someone elseâlet someone else take the responsibility.â
Claytonâs lips parted in surprise. âYou really thought that of me? Thought thatâs the only kind of guy Dana could attract?â He gave a quick shake of his head and continued toward the party. âYou really have a low opinion of her, donât you?â
âFor good reason.â Natalieâs words came out quick and strong.
âDana is a lot of things, including complicated. She tried with Emma. She really did.â Clayton didnât know why he was standing up for her but figured since she wasnât there to do it for herself, someone ought to.
âWhat, did she tell you that in the note or something? That she tried?â Natalie said, her voice rising. âOh, gosh, she did, didnât she? And I bet if she showed up on this beach, youâd still go running to her, begging her to take you back.â
Claytonâs defenses were on full alert, and he forced himself to breathe. To not say something heâd regret later.
