Clayton wanted to kiss Natalie.

There. He said it. Or at least thought it.

She was smart and funny and kind, but also feisty, and he knew she wouldn’t let him get away with crap. And she loved Emma.

And she was Dana’s sister. Which made her off limits. And made every idea currently going through his head dangerous and wrong.

But the ideas were there. And they weren’t going away any time soon.

Natalie didn’t look away, instead tugging on the jacket, like she had a nervous twitch. She was moving in closer, and Clayton wanted nothing more than to close the gap.

All he had to do was shift a couple of inches.

And then Emma cried. Whimpered, actually. It was hardly a sound at all.

But it was enough to break the spell that bound them.

Natalie was the first to break eye contact. Her gaze dropped, and she jumped to her feet, shaking her legs like they had fallen asleep.

“We should probably get back to the party,” she said, her voice soft and breathless. “You are the guest of honor, after all.”

Clayton chuckled, trying to act normal. Like everything was the same as it had been five minutes earlier. He stood and stretched his back. “Emma is the guest of honor, I’m just the bodyguard. Anyone wants to get close to her, they have to go through me first.”

One side of Natalie’s lips quirked up in their signature way, and Clayton almost lost it and took her in his arms right then and there. “And that is why all of these women are after you.”

“Is that right?”

She nodded and started back toward the party. “You’re different than I expected, you know. I didn’t give you a fair chance this morning.”

Had it only been that morning? It felt like a lifetime ago.

Clayton’s arms felt heavy as he lugged Emma’s carrier back to where the party was still going strong.

“What did you think I’d be like?”

Natalie paused mid-step and turned toward him. “Honestly, I thought you were here to get rid of Emma. To pawn her off on someone else—let someone else take the responsibility.”

Clayton’s lips parted in surprise. “You really thought that of me? Thought that’s the only kind of guy Dana could attract?” He gave a quick shake of his head and continued toward the party. “You really have a low opinion of her, don’t you?”

“For good reason.” Natalie’s words came out quick and strong.

“Dana is a lot of things, including complicated. She tried with Emma. She really did.” Clayton didn’t know why he was standing up for her but figured since she wasn’t there to do it for herself, someone ought to.

“What, did she tell you that in the note or something? That she tried?” Natalie said, her voice rising. “Oh, gosh, she did, didn’t she? And I bet if she showed up on this beach, you’d still go running to her, begging her to take you back.”

Clayton’s defenses were on full alert, and he forced himself to breathe. To not say something he’d regret later.
