Now, consider the V, which has a very different shape. Try writing it as your normally would, then try again, with a large curving entrance stroke. Write it a third time, but extend the last stroke above the cap height and curve it back around over the letter, slightly below the x-height.

Taken by itself, this letter is hard to read. The added flourish makes it difficult for the viewer to decode what letter they are looking at. However, when it is placed in a word or a longer sentence, you’ll find the brain uses the context to identify it as a letter V. As always, it’s crucial to use a critical eye when deciding whether to use a flourish of this nature. When in doubt, revise your design to be simpler.
