CHAPTER NINE

Our Subjection to Manipulation
n this final chapter of Part II, I want to acknowledge that despite everything weâve discussed thus far, some people will still fight to keep believing that fear is absolutely not a choice, and that instead, it is a core part of who we are. In response to that, here is the story of a recent experience I had while observing fear manipulation in action. I strongly encourage you to do the same so that you can personally observe the phenomenon.
You may be familiar with the trend of posting prank videos on Facebook and YouTube. A particular genre of these videos focuses on horror, using a demented, evil clown, or a murderous Chucky doll come to life. As people are walking in the park, or heading into a parking garage, or waiting for a bus, the horror character suddenly appears as if in the act of killing someone, or as though they are pursuing the unwitting âvictimsâ of the prank. As you might imagine, these scenarios create strong reactions both for the prank victims and for the viewer. I confess, I have watched these videos numerous times because of my fascination with peopleâs powerful response.
The most fascinating part, however, is that as I observed these videos, I noticed something pretty remarkable. In each situation, there was a gap in every single personâs responseâdespite the flow of action being similar across all pranks. One person, or multiple people, would enter the scene constructed by the prankster, which was being recorded by a hidden video camera, and in every case there was a clear and definitive moment of awareness, immediately followed by a pause, typically very brief, but a pause nonetheless. In this flow from awareness to fear, I would witness a transition moment, one that connected the assessment of the situation to fear. In other words, I observed the transition from awareness, to something else, and then to fear. It is the âsomething elseâ that is so powerful.
Letâs look at it more closely.
In the awareness phase, there is a moment when the subconscious mind engages the five senses to determine the events unfolding. There is also an energetic assessment as the brain attempts to understand what is taking place. The brain registers something familiar, which just so happens to be an object or objects typically associated with fear, e.g., evil clowns, Chucky, or a weapon of some kind. It is important to note here that in every scenario, the people being pranked are at some distance from the actionâeither several feet to a couple of yards away, and never within immediate striking distance. The pranksters typically run toward and after the âvictims,â and there is never actually any contact made. I include these details to further emphasize the point that you can, with your own eyes, watch each person take in the scene with no reaction, only awareness. Because there is no physical harm intended in the prank, there is no immediate sense (energy) of danger, so the energetic assessment does not register a threat to survival.
