Lincoln

A heatwave has set in across our valley. Titus and I are sitting on the balcony under the cloudless sky as I stare at the wilting plants lining the railing. We’re lethargically fanning ourselves and sweating through our clothes. Dragons love heat and we’re used to it here in the desert, but these past few days have been especially sweltering.

I take a sip between quickly melting ice cubes that clink in my glass of water, when Cullen comes stumbling out shirtless with scruffy hair. “Where’s Maya?” he asks through a yawn. “Did we finally scare her away for good?”

Two weeks have gone by and Maya is still with us. I can tell Titus is on edge, needing to know when she might leave. But he’s afraid asking her will only scare her away. Hell, we’re all on edge wondering the same thing. I just seem to be having an easier time enjoying her while she’s here without worrying too much about what happens next.

“Sunroom. Again,” Titus explains resentfully.

She locks herself in there for several hours every day. It’s another thing that makes Titus worry. In addition to her frequent need for privacy, I’ve noticed other weird behaviors from her. She locks herself in the bathroom for a long time each morning, even though she doesn’t wear much makeup. But I blame the heat. It’s making all of us a little crazy.

“What does she do in there anyway?” I think out loud.

“She’s working,” Cullen states plainly. “Reading and writing. That sort of thing. Although I don’t know what kind of work she has to do while she’s here. She hasn’t been exploring or excavating anything in the area.”

Titus’s face wrinkles in thought as his leg bounces nervously and his fingers stroke across his beard. “Unless…,” he starts slowly after a long silence, “we’re what she’s been exploring and excavating.”

“What do you mean?” I stare at him blankly.

“What if she’s writing about us?” he says more directly, panic growing in his eyes. “What if we’re her current project?”

“She wouldn’t do that,” I insist with a dismissive throw of my hand. “She knows she can’t tell anyone about us.”

“I’m not so sure,” he refutes suspiciously. “She said so herself all she’s ever really cared about is her work, and we don’t really know anything else about her.”

“Who’s to say she’s not learning as much as she can about us just so she can go back and tell everyone?” Cullen ponders.

“No way that’s true,” I continue, shaking my head earnestly.

I think back to the night before when I had her alone. The way she said my name into my ear as she rocked over me in ecstasy. Her eyes stayed locked onto mine for a long time in the greatest intimacy I’ve ever experienced. Each time we are together she gives herself over to me more and more, surrendering to anything and everything I can dream of doing to her. And I’m more than happy to oblige. Bringing her pleasure has become a new mission of mine.
