Episode seventeen
The big bad wolf
My feet carried me back and forth around the pack house. I had wondered where Hawk and Secko had been, now I knew. Theyâd been out trying to find out information on what Moreau had been up to. It was a lot.
It was official. I had a warrant out for my immediate arrest. I was wanted dead or alive by the council. And steps were being taken to have Viggo removed from the alpha of his pack, by force if needed.
In my head, that meant everybody who wanted me dead or who meant to unseat Viggo had to die. It was that simple.
"That's your father talking again, Ifiok," added her two cents. I turned to glare at her.
"I told you we should have killed them that day they came."
She shook her head. "We would have gotten the same result."
"But there would be fewer of them coming after us, Ms. He-who-ends-the-quarrel," I growled in her direction, feeling like I was the wolf.
She growled back. And took a step towards me.
Emmanuel stepped in front of me, blocking my view of her.
I swallowed past the aggravation that had turned the moisture in my throat to dust to focus on him. He took my wrist and glided the pad of his thumb over my pulse there. "Everything is going to be okay, Cherie." The way he said the words while running his fingers softly across my skin made me believe him.
His steady gaze anchored me, and I began to focus on his familiar features. his deep-set eyes, the curve of his plush lips, and the creases that had been permanently etched in the skin at the corner of his mouth because he was always smiling. I felt myself calming down.
"Feel better now, Kè mwen?" He smiled down at me.
I nodded.
"So, no more snapping at us weary souls?"
"But-"
He brought his hands up and placed a finger on my mouth, shushing me. I tucked my lip into my mouth to keep from biting him.
"No buts. You need a moment, and 'soul brother' and his little wolf do too."
I rolled my eyes. Emmanuel knew Viggo hated it when he called him that. Viggoâs wolf abhorred it. He wasnât fond of even the idea of Emmanuel being there, let alone him having nicknames for them, and he was angry at Viggo for letting him stay, as if Viggo could make Emmanuel do anything. The whole immortal thing gave him the advantage. But still, I knew if I wasnât lending the wolf my magic at night so he could run the woods with Ifiok, there would have been a lot less peace around here. Emmanuel, the man of reason, had been encouraging me to talk to Viggo about my expectations instead of telling him what he was going to do.
I peeked around Emmanuel, and my eyes fell on Viggo. He was standing with Secko and Hawk, but his eyes were on me. I smiled and gave a little wave. He narrowed his eyes. I ducked back behind Emmanuel.
