Chapter Eleven

Lera

The woods are both cold and quiet. I have only been wandering through them for an hour now at this point. When I left the castle, I made sure the grounds were completely empty before I crouched down and circled the edge of the forest. Ellie was long gone, the Omegas were nowhere to be found, and the maids signaled that all of the others were in a meeting with Rhonan in his office. It was the perfect time to escape, almost as if it were fate.

Because the trees are so massive and abundant, it is hard to see where I am going. I have made sure to walk to as many small and open clearings as possible, using the mass amount of starlight to guide me. While I had to still be cautious in my own forests back home, I was never truly afraid. Not like I am now. The sounds of the wild are otherworldly, the chill in the air bites my skin and the fear inside of me gnaws away at my bones.

No one has come to look for me and while I am not surprised, I am also thankful. Though, I will admit that a small part of me wishes that one of the maids or Omegas would join. I have no idea where I am and it’s hard to tap into my hunting instincts when my brain is so foggy. Rhonan has not left my mind since I walked out of the castle. In fact, the thoughts of him are plaguing me and they get worse the further I walk. It is almost as if I am headsick, like I am wounded from the inside out and the tears just keep widening.

I can’t think about Rhonan right now. I have to find a way out of here. He glamoured us when we were taken from our village, so I have no idea how we even got here in the first place. I remember my father stating that there was a border between the village forest and the shifter forest. Almost like an invisible wall that anyone could walk through. However, with the threat of rogues, the border is apparently guarded at all times. I have no idea what the men there are like, if there are even men there at all, but I am willing to take my chances.

The trees are starting to bend lower and I have to crouch in order to pass through. I look around in the darkness, searching for a clearing or any bit of starlight. I am simply walking by grabbing onto tree bark and pulling myself through shadows until my eyes can register even the smallest bit of light to cling to. When I finally find some, I hurry to it. My feet are stumbling over one another and I hear several snaps of twigs and branches from under my feet, but I do not stop. I push onward until something large flies in front of my face and stops me in my tracks.
