Chapter 10

Sandy was tucked up into Mike, tight. He was driving her home because she completely lost her shit. She’d seen some wild animals and lost her ever-loving mind. Who am I? Clearly, Mike was a rock star, and she wasn’t going to say no to snuggling him in the truck, but the whole lady-who-needs-rescuing thing was going to embarrass her for a long time. She sighed as they pulled into her driveway. She could see the kids in the distance walking to the bus stop and felt an immense relief. Something was totally normal, at least one thing was.

She moved to open the truck door, and Mike was already there, opening it and lifting her out.

“Mike, I can walk, I’m okay, really.”

He held onto her anyways, and before she knew it, he was depositing her on her doorstop. He stepped back.

“Sandy, you witnessed a major conflict between two enormous beasts. You felt your life was at risk. It’s not small. It’s okay to be shaken. I know I didn’t need to carry you, but damnit, I just wanted to. I want you to be okay, and safe, and carried, if need be.”

Mike brushed his hand through his black beard. Sandy looked at him as she opened her door.

“Will you come in, Mike? I can make us some tea. I’m actually starving, so I might even scramble some eggs. Want some?”

Mike smiled. “I’d love some, Sandy, thank you. I’ve got to be at work in a few, but since its only fifteen steps from the kitchen, I think I’m good for time. Also, I hear the boss is a pushover, so…”

Sandy laughed. “Yeah, I hear she’s easy, too. You don’t want to mess that one up.” She smiled at him, a twinkling in her eyes.

“Well, some say easy, some say discerning,” Mike quipped. “I happen to say, fucking absolutely incredible.”

Sandy pointed to a chair in the kitchen. “Okay, okay. Yes, I agree, absolutely incredible. And she can make scrambled eggs like nobody’s business. Bacon too?”

“Oh God, yes.”

Sandy knew it must be the adrenaline crash after a somewhat traumatic event, but she felt entirely giddy that Mike was sitting at the table again; he just belonged there. She turned to the stove to get the eggs going and could feel herself bubbling with joy. What the hell is this? Joy? For Mike? She tried to get the sensation under control. Just make eggs like a normal person, Sandy, she admonished herself.

She heard Mike moving around behind her and felt him beside her a moment later. “I’m just going to get the tea going, so you can have some while you eat, okay, Sandy? Do you mind?” He grabbed the kettle from beside the stove and filled it, starting the water for the tea. He ran his hand from her shoulder to the small of her back as he moved around her, and Sandy shivered from stem to stern.

One touch. It just took one touch. She kept her eyes on the eggs and checked the bacon under the broiler.
