Chapter Nine

Lyell

It’s strange to drive into the small town, especially when I spot Sophia hugging some woman at the side of the road instead of being in her truck. “I thought it wasn’t safe here? Why is she not in her truck?”

Topaz lets out a soft sound, his voice filled with warmth. “She’s home, let her.”

I look around. Home. That’s a feeling I don’t get when I’m here. Nothing here looks homely or even comforting. The buildings are dark, run-down, and the town feels much too quiet. It’s not that late yet, just past dinner, but I don’t hear any children playing, just the quiet of an empty town.

I follow Kieran’s truck and we pass the middle of the town, a small market place. There are some people here, mostly dragons, and a jab of pain goes through me as I see how some people are caught between their human and their dragon shape. I see someone with dragon skin, someone who has stumps on their back, like the start of wings that never progressed, arms that look a little off for human arms. Everyone is different, but it’s all... It’s heartbreaking to see.

“I thought you handed out the antidote here last fall?” Topaz was part of that operation, so why are there still some people here living in that in-between stage?

“We did.” His voice is low and he purposefully looks away from the group of people. “We also... Not everyone reacted well to it, that scared some, so they didn’t want to take it.”

“Like Sophia?” She got furious when Topaz had asked her about it a couple of days back.

“Yeah.” He drums his fingers on the door. “Don’t stare at them. Don’t say anything about it. They hate that.”

Like I’d do something inconsiderate like that. I’m not an asshole, but that he’d say it is interesting. Like he doesn’t trust me, or... I quickly glance his way, or because he’s really protective of them and takes the fact that they didn’t take the antidote because they didn’t feel it was safe enough personal. By the way he’s looking, I’m guessing the second, and that makes me look at him differently, he’s not as much a kid as he sometimes appears.

We drive down a side street and a large building rises in front of us. Kieran parks at the side of the street and someone motions for us to park in front of them. I guess we’re here. I guess this is where we’ll be staying.

I look out the window to the building in front of us. There’s a fence around the whole of the building, but the ground is overgrown. The building itself is dark, no lights on inside that I can see. The windows are high, but with the falling night, I can’t really see what’s on the inside. I heard that we’d be sleeping inside a school building, so I guess that’s this.

Gale appears next to my window, looking up at me, and I open the door. “Grab your stuff.
