WEARING HEAVY CHAIN mail and a sword at her side, Daphne mounted her horse and took to the open field. Villagers both on horseback and foot formed around her. Thomas rode up beside her and offered to serve as the scout. She was hesitant. It was a dangerous job. But there was no one she trusted more for the task, so she relented. The duty filled him with pride, and he assured her that he would be back soon.

While awaiting his return, Daphne turned to face her people. Hundreds of white eyes rested on her, waiting for her to speak. She gave one more glance at the castle in the distance. It was funny. She had spent so many years of her life yearning to be free of those walls. Now, here she was risking her life to be able to claim them as her home once again.

The villagers shouted at one another over the blasts of thunder. Daphne unsheathed her sword and raised it above her head. Lightning illuminated the blade in brilliant tones of yellow.

Everyone fell silent. Daphne lifted her chin and lowered her sword to address the crowd. "I speak to you now not as your queen, but as your fellow soldier. Let us not forget what we are fighting for. Freedom from tyranny. Freedom from fear. Your true king is dead, and so is his son. We fight for them, to honor their memory. For the life we had. For the life we want. The life we will have once again. Life, dear friends, is what you make of it. Ours is a tale of honor and courage. This day will forever change the very fabric of this realm. We cannot fail. We will not fail. It is my great honor to ride alongside you."

A few of the men at the front of the group began slamming the bottom of their spears into the soil. Alone, they didn't make much sound. Just the gush of mud. But soon the beat spread amongst the crowd, rumbling across the grassy field.

"Long live the queen! Long live the queen! Long live the queen!" Their voices boomed over the clapping thunder, their faces flashing before Daphne like glimpses of ghosts. The look about them gave her chills. She wondered how many of them would die in her name.

Howls of wind swept through the autumn sky, filling the villagers’ ears with their shrill cries. The sound reminded Daphne of the atrocitas, the beasts she had encountered twice in the silver forest. Two times she had faced them, and two times she had lived to tell about it. She took that as a good sign.

It was dusk, but with the fierce pummeling of rain upon them, it was impossible to tell. The skies were gray, the armor was gray, the swords were gray. But it wouldn't be long before everything was splashed with red.

When Thomas returned, giving them the all clear, the time for battle was upon them. Daphne turned her people and cried, "To the castle!"

She filled her lungs and released her fears.
