When the train pulled into Denver’s Union Station, John directed Breanna’s attention to the crowded platform and to four familiar faces eagerly scanning the train windows.

As soon as the Brockmans descended to the depot platform, Dottie Carroll rushed to Breanna and wrapped her arms around her, weeping as she murmured thanks to the Lord that her sister was alive and unharmed. After a lengthy hug, Matt and the children embraced Breanna and welcomed her home.

When the hugging and kissing were over, James and Molly Kate stayed on either side of Aunt Breanna and held her hands as everyone walked to the parking lot.

While they walked to the buggy, Dottie told Breanna about the birthday party at the Carroll house the next night. Breanna thanked her, then told her that John had given her the details about the trip to Emporia.

Matt suddenly announced that he and Dottie were taking them all to supper at Denver’s Westerner Hotel before they took them home.

John agreed that would be fine, but he and Breanna were treating all of them to supper. No matter what Matt said, John stayed firm until Matt agreed that supper would be on the Brockmans.

While they were enjoying their meal, Dottie said, “I can’t wait any longer to hear about your ordeal in Redstone, Breanna. Do you mind telling us about it now?”

“Of course not.”

Breanna told how shocked she was to learn there was a killer on the loose in and around Redstone, who had already murdered two people just before she arrived. She had barely started working for Dr. McClay Lowry when the killer struck again. As the days passed, more people were killed. “Then one night I was abducted from my room at the boardinghouse. The killer managed to gag and blindfold me without letting me see his face. He tied me up and put me in a wagon—the longest ride I think I’ve ever endured. I could tell we were going up into the mountains because of the angle of the climb. And I could hear water nearby.

“When he finally stopped the wagon, he took me inside a cabin and chained me to a post. I never saw his face, and he disguised his voice when he talked to me. That’s what made me think it must be someone I knew in town. He said he was going to kill me on my birthday. That’s when I knew for sure it was someone from town, because I’d mentioned it to a few people when I was talking about getting home in time to celebrate with all of you.”

Breanna went on to explain that during her captivity, she was left alone all day until the killer came each evening to taunt her. In her loneliness and fear, the Lord had brought Hebrews 11:1 to mind—that faith is the evidence of things not seen. She clung to that verse, believing that even though she could see no way to live through the ordeal, the Lord would spare her life and let her live on to serve Him and be the wife that John needed.
