Chapter Fourteen

THE NEXT morning, I left him in bed while I went to shower. Still naked, he was stunning as he lay over my crumpled sheets. It was a shame to leave him, but I needed to get ready. When I came back out, pulling up my pants as I walked out of the bathroom, he was sitting up on the edge of the bed.

Em offered me his hand, and I reached for him too. I found myself being pulled onto his lap, and I smiled at him as I sat down over his thighs. “Come back to bed,” he said.

Not that I didn’t want to join him in where his mind was already going, but I had things to do. “Wish I could, but I need to get ready.”

His hands on my hips stilled. “For what?”

“It’s been two weeks. I’m expected back at Asiq today….” I wasn’t surprised that he didn’t remember how long it had been since I was just at work, but I didn’t expect how his expression hardened by the second.

Em roughly pushed me away, and I stumbled on the hem of my pants as I fell off his lap, but I didn’t fall to the floor. As soon as I straightened up, I crossed my arms over my chest and stared him down. He looked just as angry as I imagined I did, as he looked right back at me.

“You’re not going back there,” he told me, his voice hard. It made him sound dangerous. Too bad for him I wasn’t in the least bit afraid of him, especially not after seeing how vulnerable and unsure of himself he’d been with me the night before. It was almost funny that he thought he had any right to order me about, like he had some claim to me or what I did with my life when he’d barely begun to be a part of it.

I raised an eyebrow. “And why not?”

Apparently he didn’t like me looming over him because he got to his feet as well. Naked and angry, he looked nearly feral as he stared down at me. “Because you were just kidnapped. Because killing Saunders and Diab was too easy. Someone else could still come after you.”

He was right; I could still be in danger, but that didn’t mean I was going to stop living my life on my own terms. “You’re going to have to do better than that if you expect me not to go to work today. And what’s your alternative anyway? I stay with you where you can keep me safe forever?” The idea was laughable. He was a bounty hunter; being safe wasn’t exactly part of his job either. I moved past him so that I could pull a shirt out of my closet and finish getting dressed. He stood there stubbornly as if staring at the back of my head was going to change anything.

“What would get you to give it up?”

“Being an aspasian?” I guessed as I turned to look at him over my shoulder while I pulled a shirt off a hanger.
