Winnie dropped Gillian at the station and then drove us back to the farmhouse without a word. My mood was black enough after spending time with Luther that conversation was likely to go only one way — downhill.

“Dealing with an ex in the middle of a murder investigation — that’s a recipe for madness. Why don’t you conjure yourself a glass of blood and go take a hot bath, Morticia? Aldo and I can take care of ordering dinner.”

I followed her commands because it was easier than coming up with an argument against them. An hour later, I was feeling much more like myself. I could hear Winnie and Aldo arguing about something in the living room. Since that was their steady state, I tuned out the noise and sat with my notepad instead.

Pen in hand, I wrote everything I could remember about the day’s interviews. Raddix had taught me the importance of capturing those initial impressions before we got too much distance from them. I made notes about Damien and Zoe, dithered over what to say about Tabitha’s dad, and wrote a very long, entirely inappropriate commentary on Luther. With that out of my system, I used a burst of magic to burn that last page and started again.

The ringing of the doorbell pulled me out of my state of intense focus. I was shocked at how much time had passed. Frustration was there in equal measure. No matter how many ways I evaluated the information, I was no closer to identifying a likely suspect. I flipped my notepad shut and set it aside.

Raddix was standing at the door, accepting a pair of carrier bags from a delivery woman. He took a whiff of the steam coming from the bags and sighed in pleasure. His expression changed when she told him that was the full order.

“What’s going on, Winnie? There’s no way that’s enough food for all four of us.”

She took the bags from Raddix and gave him what she probably thought was a saucy wink. Mostly, it looked like she had an eye twitch. “It’s enough for the two of us who are eating here. You and Morticia are going out to dinner.”

“We are?” Raddix and I said, practically in unison.

“You are,” she replied. “Your date last night was a bust, so I decided you needed a second chance. And before you argue, you have to eat regardless, and you can still talk about the case over the meal. I’ve made reservations for two. You’ll need to leave soon if you’re going to make it on time.”

Raddix wisely turned to me first. “What do you say, Morticia? Do you feel up to going out?”

“We do have to eat,” I admitted. “I’m game if you are.”

That settled, soon enough we were in the car heading back into town. Winnie’s reservations ended up being at a classy restaurant overlooking a golf course. The place was busy despite being a weeknight. Supernaturals of all types occupied the tables and bar area. The dress code was mixed.
